Overheating after FMIC install

hello,

 

Car has started to overheat when been driven hard after installing FMIC. car is UK spec, running 1.1bar ish on stock turbos, fuel, hks intake.

 

Rad is almost new so in good condition, good quality coolant, checked thermostat, fan etc, just seems to be air flow issue.

 

i don't currenly have a engine undertray on and i have a do-luck style front end (which seals very well on the front of the intercooler).

 

anyone got any reccomendations? do the radiator slam pannels make that much of a difference?

If the radiator is in good nick it's probably an airflow issue, you could try and make up some proper ducting, undertray and slam panel would probably help. I'd do that anyway whether I was getting a fluidyne or not.

 

Now why don't you like dogs feet?

did you replace the fan you removed??

 

as Thorin said....air will be exiting right underneath if there is no undertray as it will take the easiest way out....so will more than likely just blast right out under the car giving your rad no cooling effect at all.....you need to seal as best you can around the bumper and around the outside so no air can escape once through the core

I managed to fit my 2 row front mount intercooler just right so that i didnt have to trimthe Do-Luck at all and managed to keep the stock air-con fan & cooling coil. All i had to move was the air con filler nozzle and reservoir tank. Il post up pics tonight when i go and see the car

I had the same happen with me after fitting an FMIC that was too restrictive

 

The air just wasn't getting to the radiator

 

Mistakenly I soldiered on - I removed the second fan switch so that it stayed on all the time, uprated my radiator and even lifted the hood slightly at the window side to increase air flow too...

 

What I SHOULD have done is listen to CW and suck with an SMIC!!!

 

Dump the restrictive I/C in favour of a 2 Row max IMHO now you have it on - but this wont go away - it doesn't sound like the rad can cope with the heat soak now :(

I am about to try and organize deposits for my final batch of SMIC's. Not only does the FMIC resrict air flow to the water and air con rads, it necessitates the removal of the Toyota duct that feeds said water and air con rads, so the whole thing is a cock up. modern cars have rad intakes in the front end or the car absolutely NO bigger than vitally necessary, to keep drag low. Rad intake drag on road and race cars is a huge percentage of overall drag, so makers go to vast lengths to make the aperture no bigger than is vital. To place extra demands on that intake aperture or to remove that duct is to invite serious problems, as you have both discovered... :(

...Furthermore, the stock SMIC sheds the heatload in the driver's side wheelarch.

The bling-o-matics shed it in the engine bay (which doesn't exactly crave for any extra heat:search: )
