Guru
So I am gonna spend about £1000 - £1500 on a second car. It will be a diesel runaround so nothing special. Please help decide for me as I am leaning towards a VW Polo.....
Pete
I'm thinking of a diesel van. Cost soon ads up though when you consider what it costs to run a second vehicle. MOT - £40 p.a. + repairs Tax - £180 Insurance - £200? vehicle - £400? Monthly saving in fuel - £150-200? I worked out it'd take 5/6 months to start making a saving. 5/6 months of driving a piece of shite diesel van around before seeing a monetary benefit. Depends if I can wangle the van for free from work - we're replacing it.
Darren
Ive had a pug for 2.5 years now its been excellent! Parts are cheap and so is road tax (£110pa). 1998 onwards are the best ones with P/S... How old will the Polo be for that money? Does the 1.9d fall into the cheap tax bracket? Rather spend it on RLTC for the bad weather

Tempted by a Pug but the reputation of reliability is holding me back. And anything over a 1650cc is a high bracket car so no unfortunately not...... Have you thought about an LPG car? Only 38p a litre of fuel!!! Darren
Tempted by a Pug but the reputation of reliability is holding me back. The 1.5D is very reliable its very basic and simple and old scholl! I know two other people using them for work.....
S7EVE
Ford Fiesta!!!! I was in this same boat only 2 weeks back Matt. I bought a Fiesta Van off ebay! £350, 97(p) a years MOT, no tax, 78k, weasel. And mate, it drives lovely! The interior needs some work and the mirrors are screwed on with wood screws... but AMAZING motoring! The economy is shocking... £30 to fill the tank and it lasts forever! Being a van, I can use it for all sorts of jobs, getting my wheels refurbed, front bumper sprayed... You'll save yourself some cash too
RobSheffield
I owned a VW polo 1.9D on a P plate for 18 months, no issues whatsoever it was amazing build quality and reliability second to none I am in the market for a second car too, and im looking at Audi and VW diesels

tbourner
You get cheaper insurance and tax in a van as well don't you? I seem to remember when the MG express came out, it was the same as a ZR160, but with no back seats and the windows blacked out - IIRC it was group 7 insurance instead of 16!!!! Guru
Yeah I would like back seats and windows though
Scooter
i use a 205 diesel, nothing special but a better drive than the 106 i think and certainly very reliable so far and its on 160K+ miles.

jamesmark
Edit just seen your only spending enough for an oil burner thought there was another 0 on the end, but will leave my post in anyway. Ok so VW polo 1.9 tdi? or ar you going for the "can´t pull the skin off the porridge" SDI, if it is the TDI then you might want to consider the cheaper SEAT 1.9tdi FR (FR depending on year) Skoda VRs 1.9 TDI Both cars have the same engine, chassis, gearbox as the polo but miles cheaper depends on your budget, and those 2 are faster than the polo. I say the same thing when I get my pay check and its missing a '0' How old would the Polo for £1500 and how old would the Pug be? That may be another consideration. I would of thought u'd get a much newer Pug..
Guru
Fiesta for the money is a V reg, Polo is a R and 106 is a S so around the 98-99 plates More importantly the 106 and Fiesta would have no more that 55,000 on the clock with the Polo coming in at around 75,000 miles for the money
Angie
The Fiesta is number one for the most Stolen Cars by a long way (Depending what age) and the Pug is somewhere in the top ten. My vote is the VW. I have a 1.9 tdi A6 Audi (My work horse!)which has done nearly 150,000 miles and feels like new. It's does about 43 mpg and that includes driving it at full pelt everywhere!. You should see even better mpg with such a smaller car.
Bobbeh
Yeah, I'd go for the VW or Pug, both have great diesel engines. Obviously the rest of the Pug may fall to bits quicker than the VW.
chilli
Polo seems to be a good choice from what I've heard, but they can fetch more second hand because they are well made and reliable. anyway just wanted to add that it's not just about the saving in fuel costs that matters (to me anyway). The last 40k or so of hum drum A to B driving I've put on cheap run around cars. That's 40k not on the supra or any other pride and joy car. 40k not on expensive tires, brakes etc - you know what I mean. High performance and lots of miles generally don't go together - but if you want to do that, can't get much better than the supra to do it in. Imagine doing 100k in a Ferarri for example lol
supRo
I did a bit of a study on the cost savings of a second car so for example having th Supra as a weekend car. I found out that you don't really make a cost saving as you have to have 2 lots of insurance, maintenance e.t.c. It does save you miles from your Supras odometer though! I'm fed up of hitting kerbs and humps! I'm going for a sitting room on wheels (I have ordered a flat cap and slippers!) - a Lexus GS300 to drive during the week!
