I wouldnt be surprised if shell paid for it, these things can be easily done.

Aye, there is a LOT of money involved here, and when a supermarket chain flogs cheaper fuel of a higher specification they've got to do something to stop the drain.

 

This sort of 'independent' tests shift the sales curves with rumours and innuendo, not like-for-like.

After all Tesco have made public the specification of their 99RON fuel, Shell have not even made public the RON figure (just that it has cleaning agents and fishes swim faster)

 

I wouldn't mind if Murco (or whatever murky-sounding brand) produced a decent fuel, even if priced at a premium --- as long as they openly advertised it for what it is.

 

Of course Shell as a company is capable of distributing 100+ RON fuel. Why on earth aren't they doing it? (and proudly print it on the pumps?):search:

 

There is definately a market out there, and they know it.

A few quick questions since i cant see the article

 

Were the fuels tested in the same order as the resuls are reported? i.e unleaded first, then Tesco, then BP then Shell.

 

It says that between each test the fuel tank was completely drained and the fuels were in un-marked tanks and the operator didn't know which was which.

all im thinking, is that if the Cosworth ECU is self learning like ours, and they went unleaded, tesco, BP, Shell, then what if it learned the grades?

 

By the time shell came in, it had adjusted to the higher octane?

 

saying that though, they are saying they held the advance, and adjusted it, so it was a controlled variable. may not be an issue then

 

christ, how technical did all that sound :)

Unfortunately I haven't got KnockLink installed in the supra, so I can't try alternative fuel tanks between Optimax and Tesco99.

 

When I had the KnockLink operational the two best fuels were SUL and Optimax and the best came out to be (usually) Esso97 or BP Ultimate.

 

I only use Tesco99 on the supra now, and I have to admit that I have heard brief knocking when booted abruptly after an ECU reset (ignition timing is at it's maximum at that point)

The fact they controlled the ignition timing. Used the same boost, same engine and were in a repeattable leb environment would normally be enough for most people to consider this a fairly scientific experiment with valid results :rolleyes:

 

Obviously you can never be 100% sure...but it's certainly worth baring in mind.

Pretty sure they did it in a random order, then just put them in order at the end. Seems like a fair test to me.

i watched a test on a scooby on 5th gear and the optimax came out on top then too they tried it on a few different cars and and it didn't work with 1.6 golfs etc its not worth putting in unless its a high performance car they said.

 

That must be why I've tried all the fuels on my non turbo and it makes no noticeable difference:D

If any fuel proves to be better than Tesco99 I'll jump ship in a millisecond.

 

I have no alliances, no preferences, no bias, no inertia at all.:cool:

 

Thanks to Shell I've had the Det Symphonic Orchestra a couple of times (when it first came out) and their responses to my persistent questions were not convincing either.

 

Maybe they changed their formula, who knows. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and fill the tank with Optimax when the weather warms up again.

My BPU car feels slightly more responsive with Ultimate and Tesco 99 over Optimax. Ultimate and Tesco 99 feel the same.

 

With Optimax I get 'Stem seal' smoke on startup but not with the others!!!!

 

I had a bad case with Optimax where it deteriorated very quickly in a week. The Car ran like a bag of nails till I put fresh petrol.

 

I'm sticking to Ultimate or Tesco 99

I was about to slag this off just because it was from Banzai magazine but on looking at the article it's about the best test we've had yet. It's a heavily turbocharged engine, like ours, and it's obviously got a full standalone ECU because they can control the ignition timing to 1/4 degrees, so I very much doubt any self learning is going on. It's at a constant RPM, I suspect all environmental factors are constant because it's in an engine dyno rig - so no wheel slip, no transmission heating up, no gusts of wind... And they even used unmarked fuel cans in a random order to remove biases. Anyone thinking this was a bought and paid for test by Shell must wear a tinfoil hat :)

I just ran mine for the first time in a month, and it worked fine with month-old Optimax in it :shrug:

Not according to these test results

 

At least they bother to publish their spec, unlike the others.

They also bother to print the RON figure on their pumps. I've yet to see a single Shell pump with a RON (or MON) figure for Optimax.

Fishes swimming briskly, Ferrari pictures and internet rumours don't cut it.

Im fan of tescos 99 tried optimax tried 95 couldnt really notice any difference to be honest but on saturday on way to the pod had to put ultimate in, driving on from there engine did feel like it was pulling stronger to me could be my imagination?
