Takata Airbag Recall

I was surprised I couldn’t find any posts on this but it appears Toyota are recalling a lot of the 90s era Supras because the airbags when inflated can cause shrapnel to go flying and kill, or under inflate

Obviously a bit tricky with imports but you can check if your car needs a recall on the Toyota JP recall page.

It says it mainly effects 97-98 supras. I wonder if I’ll be able to take a 97-98 wheel that wasn’t even on my car in to get a new airbag..

People are intimating that they will now be forced to reproduce an up to date version

Interesting question. I took a subaru steering wheel that I saved from a wrecked vehicle that was part of the recall to the dealer to see how they’d handle it (I had the VIN for their proof) and the only option they offered me was to have them detonate it in a cabinet they had in the service bay. I left it with them. I also have a 97-98 toyota wheel and bag in my 95. Curious as to an official answer too.

Edit: probably answered my own question- they probably require the donor vehicle’s VIN for cya reasons.
