Just like the rest of a supra, there is a nice, easy to follow instruction book for the V160, which is pretty much an idiots guide to repairing one.

I pulled my V160 apart back at the start of summer to work out why it had a dodgy5-6th change, to find the cause of a tiny whine at cruise, and to reseal the casing which was leaking.

Using the guide I was able to change a worn input shaft bearing(the cruise whine). I checked all the gears/synchros etc for wear/clearances. Replaced the broken pivot pin in the shifter arm directional reverse linkage(dodgy change). Finally I checked any clearances I could without full dissasembley and put it all back together with all new shaft seals and sealant on the case flanges.

You will need a press and various different 'dies' for getting it apart. Some of the gears require quite a long throw, long jawed/toothed puller to get them off. I also needed to buy a 41mm 12 sided socket to get a lock nut on the end of the V160 layshaft off. Other than thst it's just a certain amount of care and mechanical competence required to service one of these things.

Saying that I don't recommend everyone now goes home and pulls their box apart. You've got to be willing to accept it may well become expensive, when you get something wrong. The parts are also very expensive for these boxes now, and not 100% are available until someone starts (maybe) producing replacements.

I would love a UK option for a gearbox refurb and I wouldn't expect any warranty despite my car currently being stock power. There's nothing currently wrong with my box, but it would be nice to have the option there should I need it. Really don't fancy having to ship it to the USA!

Do V160/161 rebuilds (or W58 for that matter) require specialist knowledge of that particular gearbox? I ask because there are many gearbox specialists in the UK. I haven't come across any that claim to be experts in V16x or W58, but I wonder if that's important. It reminds me of new supra owners seeking out supra specialists to do their servicing for them, although IMO a standard-ish supra can be well-serviced by any competent mechanic: supra experience is not necessary.

Cost and availability of parts is the potential show stopper, nothing special about them

I've got a New Tremec TR6060 MG9 box going in mine (I have it in the box sat waiting). Using in the Big Mustangs and Z06 Super charged cars rated at 700 lbs/ft (It's a T56 Magnum with an integral LS bell housing. Same box Craig used in that mental 6.9 Twin Turbo RX7 so that definitely takes over 1000 lbs/ft without issue).

CastleMaine Rod Shop make a 1/2J T56/TR6060 bell housing conversions plate for about £350 (or a complete billet flywheel / clutch/ bearing and bell housing kit £1800).

My box is £2200 new, stock TR6060 is about 2k new. So for £3800 you can have new billet flywheel/twin plate clutch, clutch slave, bell housing and gearbox. All you have to do is have a prop made to suit. so About 4k all in.

I was looking to import these but it's always going to be a case of demand being high enough to warrant the effort.

I am just toying (note, TOYING) with the idea of gearing up, forgive the pun, to rebuild these units. What prices are they citing for various levels of rebuilds? What issues are you guys seeing? Whining? Jumping out of gear? Severe vibration in certain gears? Purely precautionary rebuilds?

Some more interest here Chris if you were to start looking into them, mine functions totally fine but got a noise (like a slight whiny rattle) when in gear or the clutch pedal isn't pressed, the noise goes away when the clutch pedal is pressed in. Could bring it up to you to have a listen if it was something you were thinking of looking into :)
