Router / ADSL line problem

CJ

Recommended Posts

I am having an ongoing problem with my router / ADSL line.

Whilst using the net I sometimes get the signal dropping for no apparent reason and the orange light flashing. After a minute or so, the line reconnects and I am up and running again. I thought it may have been down to the age of the router but after updating to the latest firmware, I am now not so sure.

I am currently using a Netgear DG834v2 model (not the wireless model) after changing from the DG834G v3 wireless model which was also giving me the same problem.

My line speed has recently been upgraded to 8mb and my Network adaptor changed to a realtek RTL8139/810x (which, according to the PC, is working properly), but other than that, I cannot think of any other changes to my system. This increase in line speed has seen a definite improvement in speed but it isn't constant. My DL speed can go as high as 650kb per sec to as low as 200.

I have been advised by OTE (the Greek equivalent of BT) that the telephone cable leaving the box outside my house (that then runs around the outside of the house before coming through a hole in the wall into my kitchen area) should be changed and run through the house - but they don't do this and I would need an electrician.

Do you think that this cable (which doesn't look none to good) may be the problem?

It's plausible that the phone line going into the house is the problem. I don't know how you'd test for that though without replacing it and just seeing if it makes a difference. It seems highly unlikely that it's a router fault because you've swapped routers and the fault still occurs. It *might* be a problem at the computer (e.g. IRQ clash at the network card), but seems unlikely.

Possibly. Is it possible to remove the cover for the box and see if there's a test socket inside?

Looks like you have done the main testing part which would have been to try with another router & also update the router firmware to the latest version. Sometimes when line upgrades occur the firmware needs to be updated on the router in order for it to register this upgraded line (Which you have done).

As Thorin mentioned above it might be worth seeing if their is a test socket, just like the UK phone sockets, if you take the faceplate off you have a test socket which you can plug the phone line into.

I've have my money on the connection coming into the house if it has been happening for a while and you have used different routers. Also are you just using one PC? What type of OS are you using and connection method if you are using more than one computer?

Just one PC using Windows 7.

If it is that cable, do you think that may account for the variation in DL speeds? I use a site that OTE provided - http://speedtest.ftp.otenet.gr/ - and can have a huge difference over the course of a day.

Consider going back to basics and thinking about cable routing. Is it near run near any electrical sources? Metal pipework, Microwaves etc - all can have an affect on your signal.

I guess you've changed the filter already?

The difference in speed during the day may most likely be ISP network congestion.

You could possibly ask for them to retrain the line - this is a period during the first few weeks of activation that the line speed settles at a reliable top limit. Maybe yours is too high to remain stable.

In typical Greek fashion, the line comes to a plastic box outside my front door. It is then cable tacked all around the front of tyhe house, then up the side of the house and in through a small hole in the wall to then go into my phone socket in the kitchen. The cable looks very old and very thin.

As OTE only work as far as the connector box outside (from then on it is the owners problem), I have asked an electrician friend to run new cabling through the house and we will see what happens then.

Yes, done that.

That's what they suggested too

in the UK that could probably work - out here in Greece (and me not being Greek) I have no chance. :D

An update:

I had my electrician mate come along today and he has changed the cable for a new better quality one and also tidied up the connections within the junction box. The difference is amazing!

Not only has the drop off stopped (fingers crossed that continues) but my DL speed has now increased to around 800 kb/sec.

I am now one happy bunny :D

Well, the speed may be good but the damn dropping off of the line is still there :(

I think I am looking at;

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream

Connection Speed 7550 kbps 383 kbps

Line Attenuation 34 db 8.5 db

Noise Margin 2 db 2147483647db
