jackso11
That is one thing I wanted to ask actually. Would you service your own car rather than a garage doing it? I mean, Oil+oil filter+fuel filter and plugs are all easy to chage yourself. Or are there other things that garages secretly do that means you need to get it serviced by them? Like tweek the flux-capacitor.
Scott
Depends how trustworthy your garage is. A proper regular service on a supra is probably 150-200 of the queens. The oil for my car alone was £60. It can be very very costly. If you don't KNOW the history of the car then get all the fluids changed. Engine Oil Gearbox Oil Diff Oil Coolant Brake Fluid Power Steering Fluid Fuel filter should be done every couple of years so i would recommend doing that. Oil filter gets done with every oil change, or at least every other (If doing 2 oil changes a year). I did the lot myself, it is a bit of hassle without having ramps etc but its a worthwhile thing to do in my opinion. That way you know its done using the right stuff. I was £150 just in service fluids etc

jackso11
haha, true. I haven't even got it yet, picking it up on sat Another question, little off topic....well....totally off BPU topic... I am going from a manual to an auto and have read several posts on the best way to drive an auto. So, am I right in saying when I get in the car its.. engine on, put it in first, manu button on then just drive it as a manual through 1,2,3,D do I need to drop revs between changes? Haven't driven an auto in 5 years and the last one was my trusty 4.3L Ford Falcon in Australia...
Chris Wilson
Get it looked at by a specialist, so you don't do what some unfortunate did when he brought his "new" Supra here for a full service, suspension and BPU only for me to have to tell him it really would be better broken for spares it was such a lemon. Don't go spending money on a car that really is beyond it. Hopefully yours is a nice example, but the new owner was nearly in tears, and should never have bought the thing. These cars are elderly, some examples are best left stock and driven gently If it's fit for work I'd suggest you change the auto box fluid and filter, the diff oil, the brake fluid and engine oil and filter, as well as the fuel filter. Some of these jobs (auto box fluid and fuel filter) can be tricky to DIY. BPU mods have been done to death here. If it hasn't had a new crank damper, fit one. Check the cam belt, check the bearing in the axillary belt tensioner. Have an alignment check done. Watch tyre wear for unusual wear patterns, which can be indicative of suspension problems. Don't lower it much, if at all. Fit quality stuff. Keep a stock air box and stock filter. Beware of shiny shit that is far poorer than OE stuff. Chris Wilson
With regard to fuel filters, should they be replaced only with OEM filters, or are there any recommended third party ones? OEM Toyota or any known branded equivalent are fine. Avoid "magical" filters in fancy cases that promise the earth. A filter is a filter and the paper element stock one is perfect for its job.
