_Lynz_
I could do with some advice from members who take their cars off the road for winter. I originally took out my car insurance policy in July fully comp, with 4 years no claims and all was well. Then in November I decided to get a run about and take the Supra off the road for winter. I rang my insurance company (Autotrader) and explained to them that I wanted to reduce my cover to third party fire and theft as it was sorn'd and would be locked away in the garage. This was done and that was that. I rang tonight to increase my cover back up to fully comp as the car is now going back on the road, only to be told that I couldn't do this. He said that the company would not increase my cover and I would have to cancel the policy and take out a new one. I asked why this wasn't explained to me when I reduced the cover and all he could say was that it should have been. I told him that I was not willing to do this as I would effectively lose 9 months no claims through no fault of my own. He is now going to listen to the conversation from 5 months ago and if they find that I wasn't told then they will have to give me a years no claims but I will still have to take out a new policy. Just want to know whether anyone else has had this problem and whether there is anything more I can do about it. Am I allowed to ask to listen to the tape of the conversation? Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.
Kranz
As with all insurance companies.... their terms suit them, not you You should be able to request a copy of the conversation under the Data protection act & the Freedom of Information act. http://www.cfoi.org.uk/pdf/foi_guide.pdf A shorter explanation of applying under FOI http://www.safetycamera.org/freedom-of-information
Vicky
Insurance companies wont increase your cover incase you try and claim for something when comprehensive that perhaps you werent covered for on TPF&T.
Mrs H
Don't know if it would do you any good, but advise your insurers that you will escalate and lodge a complaint to the financial obudsman service. Vicki x

Insurance companies wont increase your cover incase you try and claim for something when comprehensive that perhaps you werent covered for on TPF&T. I can understand that but when the girl asked why I was reducing my cover I explained the reason why and said that I would be putting it back on the road in Spring so surely she should have told me that the option to increase it wouldn't be available? Don't know if it would do you any good, but advise your insurers that you will escalate and lodge a complaint to the financial obudsman service. Vicki x Yeah thats definitley an option Vic, I think he knew I wasn't just going to accept it and start a new poilcy. Will just have to wait and see what he says tomorrow
lexsum
why would you lose the 'no claims' when you have not made a claim? (an alternative is to stick to 3rd party (& don't crash) and then swap companies at your renewal date taking you NCB with you.)
_Lynz_
why would you lose the 'no claims' when you have not made a claim? Because you only get the entitlement after a year so as I would be having to start a new policy the previous 9 months wouldn't count (an alternative is to stick to 3rd party (& don't crash) and then swap companies at your renewal date taking you NCB with you.) Shouldn't have to do this though really, I don't want to have to take the risk because they neglected to tell me I couldn't alter it back.
markssupra
Not had that problem as I keep it fully comp even when sorn'd and locked in garage, good point though, they should have told you at the time. Good luck.

What, people be dishonest....... really??? "No, its not" "Ok then, what if it wasn't stolen last night but will be stolen tomorrow night?" I see your point
