SUPRALOOPY
Well I get home to find out the washing machine is broken, so I stripped that down and have now got to find parts for that on a sunday:( I then find a water leak under the sink and have sort that. I go to fit the wheels I have got and one of the hub rings is missing:taped:. I just sit down to sort out my ext HDD and its shat itself, No power, so I swap the power pack over and still nothing:taped: So now I'm really peed off as that drive had ALL my pictures and music on:rolleyes: I thought well its broken so lets see how it works, So glad I did that as its just a normal hdd with external board:) So I pulled it apart and swapped it to slave with the jumpers and I'm now copying all my stuff to the other pc and I'm going to make a disk backup of it too;) I think I'm going to have a small drink and go to bed:search: WHY ME??? Rant over Dave:)

Carl_S
The alternative would have been to pay someone to do it. You did it. And saved a heck load of money. Well done.

JustGav
Definitely get some with multiple disks, either raid 1 or raid 5 at the BARE minimum. That way if you loose a disc you won't loose the data. Check careful as a lot of this NAS units which are cheap, are either raid0 or jbod and offer zero protection and in fact an almost enhanced risk, because if the data is split across all the disks without any safety you would loose all the data by loosing any one of the discs. RAID 0 = striping, ie half the data on disc 1, half on disc 2 RAID 1= mirror, ie a copy on disc 1 and a copy on disc 2 RAID 5 = leeetle more complicated, suffice to say it offers protection, but you don't waste an entire disk (requires 3 or more discs)
Steve
Mine is this one http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=97390 but it has gone up in price since i got mine . Nice and simple to use though. Rant over Dave:) Dave, I fully understand you frustration. My washing machine blew up over xmas, my dishwasher hose split end of november and flooded the kitchen. The laminate started lifting up so the insurance company are replacing it, But the day before I ripped the old stuff up to find water still laying there. The insurance company should have sent someone to dry the kitchen but didn't so now the units have rotten. The surveyor has been out and said the concrete floor is wet along with the walls, This will need to be dried out, then the units fitted, then the floor. So i have concrete floors until it is all sorted. Oh and my koi keep dying! hopefully nothing to do with the garden full of s*$& where the drains blocked and overflowed and filled my garden with three houses worth of poo.!
