whats the deal on speed sensitive steering?

Hi folks

Can someone tell me what speed(s) the different sensitivities of steering kick in at and what sort of effect it is supposed to have?

Also - have there been any reports of this logic being buggered up by a poor kmh > mph conversion?

Yss lots. If the conversion isn't done properly then the steering thinks that 50mph is 50kph and gives a lot more effort than it should, resulting in very light and responsive steering.

I'm not sure - but the reason I am asking is that at high (ie. > 140 leptons) speed my motor jumps around all over the place and the steering seems way lighter than my last Supe which was rock solid all the way.

I was thinking that the steering should get heavier with speed - and didn't know if it was progressive or went in steps or just had two modes - and I needed to know what speeds all this is supposed to happen at :-)

Rob,

I have the same problem with my VVTi Tiptronic. It's fine if I disconnect the SLD/DSC but then I'm restricted to 112mph. Also the traction control is seriously screwed up by the DSC/SLD and I have to turn the TC off all the time, is yours the same?

And I've been wondering too, the guys who imported my car fitted a derestrictor/convertor from Amber Performance (supposedly for the Supra) but the steering feels scarily light and means I drive quite slowly as I don't know what will happen in corners - the rear end stepped out without me expecting it the other week.

Note: I have got low-profile Goodyear Eagle F1 tyres (265x35zr18 on rear and 235x40zr18 on front) which help the confusion!

Steve_b and Iceman, have you guys also got VVTi Supras like me and Rob? The VVTi models have a different ECU and TC system to the older models and it seems like the PAS system is more sensitive too (more sensitive to incorrect speed signal)

VVTI, Same story. I have spent a fortune trying to iron this problem out, tracking, geometry set ups etc

I thought it might be the speedo converter, buggering the system up.

Even a gust of wind is enough to introduce a slight wobble.

Pete Betts may be able to help us on this one, with some of his electonic wizardry.

Wow - sounds like we got a trend going here - VVTis and otherwise.

So - what we gonna do? Collar the honorable Mr Betts to see what he thinks?

Incidentally - I only seem to have a problem at high speeds 140+ do you guys get this at lower speeds too?

This may not be down to the electronics controlling the steering, but a mechanical issue, eg. worn bushes, joints etc. What age is the car and have you had the car on a ramp and suspension/steering checked over recently?

Edit: just read your sig, 98 car, I'd still get it checked out mechanically first (if you haven't already) before thinking it could be an electronic problem.

Yar - had full steering geometry check / setup last Autumn - nobody can see a mechanical prob.

The car's only done about 30K miles.

Do any of you use a Thor converter?
I've been trying to buy one since mid January. Pete said they were all out of VVTi compatible DSCs and to try him again in Feb. He hasn't replied to the emails I've sent him since then. I keep meaning to ring him but personal calls are not the done thing where I work.

I have sent Pete an email as well. No reply.

Not too much of a problem at the moment though. Credit card liable to explode if I use it any more this month.

I also want one of his boost cut controllers.

Same story with calls from work.

Do I smell a group buy possibility?
