Street Lights being switched off

I dont know if this is a nation wide thing or just local The local coucils have decided to switch of an awful lot of street lights in villages around me.

I think its an appsoloutly terriable decision. Their reasoning being that the are reducing their carbon footprint. I think the greater danger is not the emitions produced by street lights rather the complete lack of visabilty on the streets and coldisacs (sp?). I would understand more if they chose to switch them off later in the evening say 10 o'clock but not to have them switched on at all is stupid. It dark now by 4 and at that time there are alot of people still about, walking dogs, teenagers off to see mates etc. People are stupid and will run out infront of cars to cross the road and with no lighting you really dont see them until they cross.

I also think that safety in general is reducedalong with increased chances of criminal behaviour. Im sure criminals will feel more confident under the cover of darkness.

And will the council drop the council tax, which is used for this sort of thing? I doubt it.

This is happening where I am too .. some roads makes sense, but others are just dangerous, especially when there are houses with almost blind drives to pull out from ... let alone pedestrians.

Sign of the times huh ?

Absoloutly, another good point. I agresome places make sense such as faster roads between villages/towns etc but in the actual places themselves. I travel through a village every night where this has happened. My mum helps out with the Brownies there on wednesdays. Last night as I drove through there on my way home there were loads of little girls, some with parents, walking to the hall. All wrapped up in dark clothes, you could barely make anyone out. Daft.

Sounds to me like they need to install a speed camera there to make sure everyone drives slower.

Indeed:) But either way I still feel, no matter waht the speed be it 20mph or 40 (its a 30), I'd still like to see more clearly whats going on around me. Like you could when the street lights were on:)

Good excuse for a nice set of HIDs if you've not already :)

Speed camera or not hitting somebody at 20mph is still going to damage them, if they left the bloody lights on atleast you might have a chance of seeing them first. Pkus the money they spend on a speed camera and maintaining it would come close to covering the costs of keeping a short stretch of road lit. What they'd be better doing is turning the lights off during anti-social hours like 2am-5am or something, rather than just turning them off completely, especially in winter time.

The public car park that I use for work(I don't take the supra to work though) are not switching the floodlights on so the whole car park in Wetherby is in complete darkness when everybody is leaving work (a muggers and car theives paradise really).

Yeah right! More likely to reduce the electricity bill or claw back some of the Icelandic money, was your council really affected....?

My suggestion of a speed camera was not of the serious kind. :)
