JustGav
All depends if you want to just have louder speakers or a proper home cinema system... Much like car mod... it is a very slippery slope. Friend of mine bought himself this http://www.pioneer.co.uk/uk/products/archive/VSX-AX2AS-S/index.html which was a nice compromise.

Matt Harwood
You can get a good, but not extreme system for abour £1k. Go for a proper AV reciever, a decent set of home cimema speakers with a subwoofer. Once it's all set up and you get all the true effects from a good action film, you'll never look back. A properly set up surround sound system isn't compareable to a stereo. With a DTS or Dolby Digital sound track, you get audio effects from the front centre, left, right and rear left and right too. The real deep sub-bass is taken away from the audio speakers and directed through a dedicated subwoofer, so that the normal speakers don't lose any quality during effects like explosions. JustGav
Not sure on black, but this is Onkyo's flagship (aka lots of pennies) http://www.eu.onkyo.com/products/product_en_43572.html

Muffleman
I have the Kef home cinema system with the egg satellite speakers and sub. Actually wanted big speakers, but struck a compromise with the missus Sounds very good but is really for home cinema, so music can be less than 100%. That coupled to a Yamaha AV Receiver and I'm well happy This amp http://www.richersounds.co.uk/showproduct.php?cda=showproduct&pid=YAMA-DSPAX759SE And these speakers http://www.kef.com/ht3000/index.htm

I bought my dad a set of Coda 8's which he still has, and I got myself Kef Reference 1's. Lovely lovely sound.

edd_t
I recently bought this, only £350! http://www.panasonic.co.uk/home-cinema-systems/sc-pt850eb-k/index.htm Its brilliant, I do have it hooked up to a Panasonic TV for extra goodies though. ivan
I picked up a Marantz AV amp from fleabay recently for £90. DTS and Dolby Digital output into 5.1 speakers. Works a treat with DVD, Sky and the multimedia PC.
Homer
Some of the off the shelf stuff for £300-400 is superb, it really depends if you want to have good quality sound or superb quality of sound. The step to the high end stuff is a very steep one! I currently have a 1000 watt £2.5k 5.1 DTS system (okay it's 6 years old so hardly cutting edge), but to be honest I don't notice any difference between this and my sisters 400 watt £400 Pioneer system It's not like it can ever get past 1/10 on the volume control If you're on a budget, then pick up a 2nd hand system from ebay There is some top end older equipment on there for very reasonable money
AlexM
I wouldn't buy anything other than an Onkyo at the moment, the 605 is a very good 'budget' receiver (£400), which supports all the new audio formats that tend to be on Blu-ray and HD DVD movies (DTS MA, Dolby TrueHD). It's available in Black or Silver and has dual HDMI switching and Component upconverting (though you only mention a PS3 so probably not needed). You should be able to find the Kef 3005 speaker package for £600ish (only in Silver though, Black seems to have a hefty price premium), and a pair of stands are in the region of £125. Other speaker options in the same bracket are the Mission M-Cube 5.1 package, (surprisingly good for the size) or the Acoustic Energy Aego T 5.1. Budget an additional £100-150 for some cables and you're there. If you're a movie buff add a Toshiba HD-EP35 (~£260) for HD DVD & Bitstream capability, and you'd have a very nice setup. Most Hi-fi stores should have a dedicated room so you can book a time to have a listen and view the various options, if you want to of course. I came on here to learn about mk4s but I couldn't stop myself posting on something AV related .
