I'd personally go for Glasgow over Edinburgh everytime. It's more laid back and less "up it's own @rse" than Edinburgh. If you want to sample Edinburgh without actully going there then a night out in the West End of Glasgow would probably suffice. There is a Jungleurs (SP) in Glasgow city centre, which I'd only 10mins from Glasgow airport and have accommodation for all price ranges.
