yup sold the idea to me - I'm going to go brand spanking. Are they good for some decent power out of the box or is there anything worth strengthening beforehand? is there any difference between the 60 and 61? both fit in without mods? thanks for the feedback so far guys, saved me barking up the wrong tree
-
yeah thats a fair point, think it might be the only way really.. Are there many differences between the two? I've found a supposedly brand new 160 that's not much more than a used box so I think it'l be bought given how much unknown used boxes go for - then there shouldn't be any worries between that and the internals..

Trying to avoid the auto route at the mo ideally - want the car for the track and as good as my old TT-A was, an auto just wouldn't give quite what I'm after.. Don't get me wrong, I'm not necesarily chasing huge power, but deffo want in the 550-700 bhp ballpark Car was bought for a bargain price due to the work needed so sticking with it either way

Cheers for that, I'm struggling to find much on them! First look suggests one could be had for much less than the v161 setup so could be a mid term stop gap.. have been having a search but struggling to find what's involved in the r154 or BMW getrag route - the more plug and play it is the better from my POV but balanced with the cost side of things.. The e46 M3 box is seeming like the most attainable route - plenty of manuals and SMGs available that can be converted to manual.. any advise on what's needed to fit?

Ah cheers mate, noted! edit: gone for the Bosch 044 now

Not much to write home about at the moment https://scontent-b-lax.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xpa1/t31.0-8/p960x960/10655251_10152304943346829_1024617469644015791_o.jpg Started stripping the interior, found some bride's going for a good price Carbon stradia jobbies. so will probably go that way, with a roll cage/harness. I've found a few harnesses that seem to bolt on to the existing back seat seatbelt points.

glad you mentioned that - possibly a silly question but what's the best way to identify a scrapped crank - is it Just a case of measuring the clearances? I've found a few companies selling balanced oem cranks for reasonable prices which I was thinking of replacing it with to be sure. Rods I'm going for a forged set so that's covered. Oil pump has been purchased as a matter of course. I was thinking of purchasing a built head so could be the go there - cheers for that though had overlooked the steam clean - will be sure to get it off somewhere for that prior to rebuilding it. Anything else worth looking at while I've got it open? With the bearings etc done - If I'm chasing about 700 bhp ultimately - will a forged or even balanced crank be worthwhile?

cheers all, interesting responses! will have a look at some of the links. While I like the idea of a hybrid auto, ultimately I want this supra to be the track toy that my last one never got the chance to be so I think I'll rule out going any auto routes sounds like I might have to put the stoppers on things until I find a 6 speed - can you guys clarify re the different boxes - seems like the options are: W58 - 5 speed supra? W59 - 4 runner box, also 5 speed? R154 - ? V160/v161 - supra 6 speed? Getrag e46 M3 350z box (possibly not reliable after 500 bhp?) Out of the box are the 6 speeds built enough to handle some serious power? Bit dubious about buying one so would probably look at getting it recond too - this is getting pricey! but might as well do it properly. Will see how easy I go taking the lump and box out - if it doesn't give me too many grey hairs I'll put it back in for now until I can come across a good box. (giggidy)

cheers guys!

Hey guys, Struggling to come across an answer. I've bought a TT'd 5 speed NA and am pulling the engine - seems a good time to sort the gearbox to handle the power. But I'm a bit lost really - Trying to keep the budget down if possible, an uprated clutch etc but am I setting myself up for trouble if I try and go for bigger power on a 5 speed? can anyone advise what the top end of their capability is? 6 speed boxes here cost more than I paid for the car in full! cheers!
-
cheers guys ^ yup nailed it It's actually (kinda) cold here at the mo but the halo lights in the garage have me sweating soon enough! If the crank pistons rods etc are all good for the power I'm chasing I'll give it a miss, but if not it'l be silly not to uprate while it's open.. Reliability is pretty important too.. So I made a start today: https://fbcdn-sphotos-a-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-xfp1/t31.0-8/p960x960/1979212_10152300867916829_1862317551309828290_o.jpg engine just needs to be drained of oil and a few bolts and it'l be ready to go on the stand

Hey guys, not been around here for years now since I had to sell my Jspec TT around 7 years ago due to circumstance Have relocated out of the UK now, but this forum's a lot more active and full of info than many of the others out here so back again So, I've finally pulled my finger out and picked up: https://scontent-a-lax.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xfa1/v/t1.0-9/q85/s720x720/10155178_10152327899381829_5132727396839246737_n.jpg?oh=b29612880589bae007d0aae091f87e58&oe=54F5A39B '97SZ with a 2JZ transplant mated to a 5 speed. Got it for a bargain price (the equivalent of around 2 grand uk), I could easily break it and get more back so I'm v happy with the purchase.. https://scontent-a-lax.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xap1/t31.0-8/10608297_10152300462731829_7404477371081839087_o.jpg It's not in great condition - have seen better, have seen worse.. She's been sprayed in matte black, not something I've come been with before so no idea how detailable it is. I actually really like the stealth fighter look for a track car, so I think I'll keep the colour scheme. The more I look at the front bumper the more I actually like it - it needs some fibreglass repairs which I will try and DIY. The overall plan is: 1) strip and rebuild engine, crank, bearings, seals, (pistons, rods etc? Not sure how far I'll go here) 2) strip back paint, LOTS of carbon fibre.. would love a wide body but I don't has the skills. I want to get as much of the work done myself as possible, but might conceed for a nice bright paint job being most of my cars and bikes end up black. 3) Brakes, suspension, wheels, interior It's road registered and ready to go so ultimately I want a fast road car which will handle the track without any issues. I was aiming at 500 bhp but the reason I bought it was to save modding my beemer where 500 is close to the ceiling and hard to get to - so I think I'll be happy with around 700bhp ultimately. Spec list is below (will be adding to it as I make a few decisions) Have / have ordered: ACL race series bearings Turbo timer Boost Gauge FMIC 50mm radiator/fan setup Head gasket (oem) New oem oil pump New oem water pump Wiseco Pistons Eagle rods Rear strut Bride fixed carbon seats 4 point harnesses Bosche 044 pump - good for 685 bhp so am going to call that my ceiling - do not like the idea of a twin setup at all although may look into a swirl pot and inline pumps.. Carbon fibre dash facsia Black leather dash with red stitching OMP red alcantara steering wheel / boss kit To be had: 8 pot K-sport brakes up front, big oem brakes moved to the back if possible - or will just go for a new kit. May be tempted to brembos but the 3-4k price disparancy is putting me off.. 800cc injectors Crank inished / forged crank replacement/conrods ARP rod bolts ARP head bolts ARP main bolts Full exhaust V160 as I don't think the W58 will last too long Single turbo setup tbc Porsche GT2/GT3 is the sort of inspiration I'm going for. A track prepped car that is still functional and a nice place to be - with a lot of weight saving. I'm going to carpet over the back once everything's out, rollcage and rear strut in, race seats etc. Sticking to the stealth fighter scheme in a way. I also want to come up with a way of minimizing the amount of aftermarket gauges for this same reason - a screen in the double din slot which could show diagnostics is ideal edit: decided on a Nexus 7 tab, and a bluetooth box with llama installed to keep the power routine on key. Any suggestions or comments or ideas with what way I need to go to acheive the power etc would be awesome Here goes nothing!

ah, I remember you said you were going to bpu her when you picked her up off me - glad to see she's gone to a good home - would love to see it in person one day! Sorry to hear about your job - hope it all goes well - Agree with the above, re the media though. I was saving for a focus st at one point as a company car, and I couldnt believe how often people would advise against me buying a car or property because of how bad they heard things were on the tv.. its really terrible..
-
well now thats a familiar photo! glad to see she's still going strong - You've done everything that I'd dreamt of doing but never had the time or money to do when I bought her - It looks sensational
-
will get up pics asap (ie, as soon as I can dig up some pictures for the camera!)

Cost about £11 or so, but never used - all original toyota parts from my local dealer, but I unfortunatley sold before I got to use them. how about £8 delivered? Any takers/offers welcome? - I've no longer a use for them!
-
Near the town centre. Very interested but missed the number - looked very nice, had an owners club badge on it! anyone??
-
Do you have a number him at all? that's just around the corner for me, and looking at having a bit of work done to a few cars!
-
wow good to know there are so many people from Slough here lol I only ever see 2 other supras - a red and a black. I live near to asda and the Copthorne Hotel.. Bought a non runner uk nasp now that the TT has gone but it's off the road so I'm driving a black ZT for the time being!

but I'm having such a varied response! some may know I sold my supe due to work requiring me to do more miles. I wanted somethign more economical, so bought a zt. It's a v6, better economy on the whole and much cheaper insurance, however, this autumn, my ncb kicks in. Supra insurance will be realistic for me again, and I'm missing my TT way too much. I want to get a supe and a second car, an astra or the likes. So realistically, what can I hope to find price wise for a UK spec TT? Mileage doesnt concern me too much, nor does age. Must be a mkiv of course, and a TT, and I wouldn't mind another auto to be honest. What am I realistically looking at? I've found uk TT's with high miles from 3k to 7k, and PLENTY of jspec's for 3k-5k, but jspecs are much more expensive for me to insure being 19 so desperatley avoiding them!! I'm a bit baffled at what sort of price bracket the uk tt's fall into at the moment! many thanks:D
-
I would have thought the drag would have slowed it a bit too - a friend has a Jspec though, and always said she was more economical at speed, so could be some truth in it..
-
hehe true, but I meant that I'd see a more noticable difference in consumption on boost with the spoiler down, rather than on boost with it up if that makes sense?
-
my JDM used to at 60 too, consumption was generally worse with it down I found, especially when on the boost, but it felt too light with it up!
