  1. Cheers, def looks like it is the starter motor. Ive read some bits on refurbing the starter motor and it looks like you need get the car on the ramps and removing the bolts is tricky. Im thinking that I might as well buy a second hand SM and get the local garage to fit it. If it turns out to be the battery, it has a 3 year warranty anyway so would be able to claim on that.
  2. Just called my local garage and they want to charge £50 to just look at the thing! I dont remember this being standard practice so will phone around a few people in the Basingstoke area I think....
  3. Not sure if this helps but just went to start the car after its been sitting for 2 hours (had 1 hour journey into work this morn) and it fired up perfectly.
  4. Hi Matt, Cheers for the reply. I did consider the battery but then it occured to me that a new one was put in about a year ago. Also, the lights/ stereo etc dont seem to have any issues with them. I thought it could be something else but guess the garage could qualify. Thanks
  5. Hi guys, Im hoping this is pretty easy to diagnose but thought I'd ask for your input prior to calling the garage if thats ok. I noticed about a month or 2 ago that the Supe was having a little trouble in the mornings when starting. I initially thought it was something alarm/ immobiliser orientated as I pressed the alarm deactivation on my Toad alarm and then went to start the engine and it just clicked or gave a very slight turn. I would then press the key fob again, try the ignition and the car would start. I may have to repeat this process a few times with the fob/ alarm for the car to start. This morning I had to try about 8 times before the car laboured to turn over and start. Its been sat there unused since Friday evening so has had a full weekend to possibly drain something if thats the cause? I think looking back it has been at its worst when left over the weekend for instance. I wondered if it was something simple or would you believe its related to the alarm somehow? Advice would be great on things to check or possible faults? Thanks, G
  6. Didnt really get the chance to stress the brakes last night after topping up the brake fluid. The light didnt come on though and I have an inkling that the fault is cured. I think I must be getting over paranoid about the car as she approaches the big 20 Birthday!
  7. Hi - Its the red light....didnt even realise there was seperate Orange light....I suppose thats a good thing. I have topped up brake fluid and will see if I can get the light to come on on my commute home!
  8. You know when you ask a question and then someone responds.....only then you realise that you should have engaged common sense to answer your own question! Just checked and it does seem low. Will get filled and let you know. Hopefully problem solved! Thanks
  9. Hi guys, Just wondered if anyone had any input as I have a 94 NA 100k miles that when I brake under high revs (cant rememeber if I have clutch depressed but will try it!) the EML light comes on for about 2-5 seconds until the engine settles/ speed comes down. Its going to cost me £70 to attach it to a local garages PC to see if the fault is registered and wondered if anyone else had any possible suggestions on what it could be. The car has an oil leak that im aware of that has caused the EML to come on previously but im now aware so keep the oil levels up to avoid. Any thoughts?
  10. Hi - not sure to be honest. No smoke so am pretty sure that the MOT tester has bodged up again!
  11. Christ! Just took the car to my local garage and they got it up on the ramp. We had a look underneath and there is a bolt missing from a heat shield.....bolt replaced and noise gone! I fully suspect that the wrong CAT test was done hence the readings being high but im going to leave it and worry about it next year when due for MOT. Had a puncture in my off side front tyre also that they repaired so total cost was £4.95! When I was initially looking at / being quoted £250 + labour + VAT to replace the CAT.....not a bad ending and well worth my time (once again) in chatting to those in the know on mkivsupra.net!! Cheers guys, G
  12. Yep - im prepared for all eventualities having worked in car sales for a number of years. Its probably why I hate the normal mechanic mentality. I plan on dropping the Supra in tomorrow at the local place for them to have take a quick look at. Hopefully they can just give me an honest response on what the problem is and what parts are needed to fix. We shall see.....
  13. Hi Morpheus, I dont have the room really although the guy opposite me spends most of his weekends under his car in the close! I have a large drive but its on a dangerous angle so wouldnt chance ramps there! I have a garage literally a 3 min trip away from me so may drop in on them to see if their attitude is helpful or the usual "gonna cost ya" type scenario! Cheers, G
  14. Was using City Honda in Basingstoke (I used to work there). I know nothing about CATs! If the truth be known, Im confused as to what part I need to get rid of the rattle and pass future MOTs
  15. Hi guys, ive progressed things to the service manager as i had issue with the Mrs car also that they were shoddy on. I got this response back from him in reference to the Supra: "The technician feels with the Supra that the first CAT has failed and debris from this breaking down has been carried forward in to the section carrying the second. The second CAT is housed inside the first section of the exhaust so unfortunately we have now way of knowing for sure if this has actually failed or not. Toyota have faxed us over the parts schematic and are quoting £545 + VAT for the first and £459 + VAT for the second. Please let me know if you would like me to fax or email this to you so you have the relevant part numbers." Does the N/A actually require complete replacement CAT units to get fixed? I noticed a few Supra exhaust parts on EBay that seem to be able to replace the back end of the exhaust system. Sorry if im being stupid here but I know very little about this sort of thing. The ads ive seen are as follows: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/TOYOTA-SUPRA-MK4-2JZ-STAINLESS-CAT-BACK-EXHAUST-SYSTEM-/150531211561?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item230c5c0129 http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/TOYOTA-SUPRA-TURBO-JZA80-STAINLESS-STEEL-DE-CAT-PIPE-/140401072638?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item20b08e59fe If the rear part of the exhaust section does need replacing, I wouldnt mind it being changed for a more throaty sounding exhaust so not sure if this is an option as part of the change over/ repair?! Cheers for your help guys
  16. Still not heard anything back from them so time to take the Supra to another garage I think
  17. Just called Livingstones on the advice left in a previous post.....£100 less than Sky's current quote and £25 less than last years quote. As the man said... Here's my credit card
  18. Agree - just had Sky call up saying my insurance had gone up by 15%.....no crashes, no claims, no points and 20 years driving history of which the last 5 has been in the same Supra. What is it with insurance companies and their mandatory yearly price hike!
  19. Hi - Its actually passed the MOT as a favour apparently! They have said it wont next time around. The main issue is the noise from my point of view as its pretty terrible so really need to get it sorted. Im going to look underneath again tonight to see if I can see anything loose that could be the issue. They did pick up that the comb had deteriorated at the MOT so I think they have presumed it has gotten worse and is now the cause of the rattling. Ive sent an email to them to outline my frustrations and requested answers to questions. Still nothing received so think this will be the last time I use them. They just can be bothered basically.
  20. Hiya - most of that went over my head to be honest. One thing I do know is that it doesnt resemble a kazoo on the sound front! It is a very metal sounding vibration with a lowish pitch. I think they do mean the comb rather than cone (i must be getting on if the old hearing is failing!). Do both CATs have the comb in? At the moment im trying to find out what CAT they perceive as being the problem....the garage probably didnt even know there are 2!
  21. Hi Guys, thanks for the info. I will find out which one is faulty. The car makes a funny noise at 2200 revs no matter what gear and they believe its down to the cone inside the cat. Not sure if both cats have this cone or not? Thanks for the loan offer but I think I require a permanent solution as hopefully then it will be done and dusted. Interesting info about the emissions though and it seems the tester possibly needs reeducating on the emission level pass/ fail rates on an NA. Whats the bet when I call them tomorrow and ask which cat I need, they dont even realise there are 2! Happy days!
  22. ok thats interesting and shows my lack of knowledge!!! I just got told by the garage that I need a new catalytic converter.....didnt realise there were 2!
  23. Ermmmmm.....I onced owned a Delorean. Ermmmmm......I went back in time cos it was so quick. Ermmmmm.....was racing a Supra the other day in Lidl car park but not sure who won as I got transported to 1967 once I eventually got passed 60mph. Totally Bo shank and ting....init though
  24. Hi there, Just had a fail on my MOT as apparently the cone inside my Catalytic Converter has busted. Apparently I need to replace the Catalytic Converter. My car is a 1994 N/A Import manual so if anyone can help get me back on the road that would be great. Cheers
