Actually, i've just remembered. I had a similar thing happen on my audi a couple off weeks back, really loud squeek at the front. On inspection it turned out to be a small part of the caliper shield had rusted off and wedged between that and the disc. Poked it out with screwdriver, job done.

Thing is with bikes, is the margins are much more narrow. You can be the most sensible person on the road and still get caught napping . There's lots you only learn through experiance.

Depends what kind of person he is really. First reaction would be to say bad idea. R1 is very fast and and needs to be ridden with confidence. But if he's sensible then may be ok.
