thinking of going to the darkside! (BPU)

 ok been thinking about it for a while now and after my run with a heavily modded evo 6 im very tempted to go FULL bpu very soon! deffo before summer!!

seems a good investment & alot of power per £ spent

so first bit is easy

£80 fcd

£160 (i think?) cw first decat pipe

£350 blitz i colour

then the hard part:think: do i go front mount, and have the active spoiler always down (sad i know but i like seeing the light come on at 63 mph!!& go off at 47:haha: and i don't have to worry about clipping it on a kerb!)

or get a smic Then another box of worms:( £650 cw smic? im sure this would be the best choice! i have always found out, you really do get what you pay for!! or go for a cheap-ish one £250ish,miami gt/ebay? prob not the best choice in the long run? ie 3 years down the line with a bit more power!

+ fitting of all this £?? How much would you think?

so £1240+fitting or

£840+fitting

want to get it right first time around with no niggles!

So which route do you think i should go? very confused!

Just had new toyota plugs good for another 55k would they be up to the job??

Whats the standard uk car @the wheels?293 rwhp sound about right? im guessing on a loss of 10%? so how much rwhp should bpu make on low mileage/well looked after uk engine @1.2 bar ? i would hope for 370/380 or am i just dreaming? but would love to have a real 400 rwhp car!

ummmm think after 4 years of standard ownership ive caught the bug!!

the next few years could be expensive! :D

cheers for your thoughts!

Hi Chris

I would recommend anyone intending to go BPU, first get their car/engine thoroughly checked out by a specialist to ensure everything is in good working order. BPU puts extra strain on the turbos and engine, so best to make sure everything is ok first. Most Supras are also getting on in years and other things such as brakes and suspension should be checked out, ie. you don't want to spend a load of money on performance parts and then find a problem which you hadn't budgeted for.

In terms of which intercooler to go for, I would consider what your short term and long term goals are. If you only plan to go to BPU levels, then I would recommend either a side mounted intercooler or a 2 row front mounted intercooler. You tend to get what you pay for, so go for the best you can afford. There are lots of choices of intercoolers both SMIC and FMIC, if I can help with information/prices then please let me know.

You will need to fit a cooler grade of spark plug, to prevent mis-fire at higher boost levels.

These are the parts I would budget for:

Intercooler - if in poor condition replace this as first priority

Exhaust - unless you have aftermarket one already)

Decat pipe(s) - noted you have a UK spec, so restrictor ring not required

Fuel Cut Defender

Boost Gauge - essential for monitoring boost levels

Spark Plugs - 1 grade cooler

Boost controller - needed on your UK spec, not essential on a J-spec, some boost controller show boost levels, which will negate the need for a boost gauge.

If I was going BPU, I would also fit the following:

New OEM Oxygen Sensor - to ensure correct fueling

New OEM Fuel Filter - to ensure sufficient fueling

Exhaust Gas Temp Gauge or AFR gauge - so you can monitor things and make sure everything is within safe levels.

I would also personally do the following:

Full service - including all fluids changed; engine oil, gear box oil, diff oil, coolant, etc.

Dyno session to check Air/Fuel readings - not needed if you fit an AFR gauge.

If it was a high mileage engine, I would also get a compression test done beforehand.

Some of the above may seem a bit extreme and unneccessary, but I would personally ensure that the car is in good working order, everything is considered beforehand and the job is done properly, so there are no suprises down the line.

At 1.2bar you'll be looking at around 375-400hp at the flywheel.

Also have a read of this thread in the FAQ section http://mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?t=94705

That's a great post once again Nic and good mention of the fuel pump too MKIVDreamer.

I'd go for the AFR over the EGT anyday of the year, likewise a FMIC over SMIC if you have an aftermarket bumper fitted. Like Nic said though, a full service and complete fluid change is recommended first before the fitment of the above to ensure everything is in tip top. ;)

Cheers nic for all the info there! yes i agree it should all be done properly, and i don't want to loose any realibilty either so i think your post is spot on to do a proper BPU!!

just to give you all the bigger picture i already have 2nd decat/blitz nur spec/boost gauge/new rad/cambelt changed (3k ago)/rear shocks changed (3k ago)/f+r discs + pads changed/ gearbox oil/diff oil changed (15k ago) fully serviced every 9k! and the car has now got 67k on the clock! so i would think very healthy! in 4 years of ownership i have not had any probs with her just general maintance!

Would i need new full pump as i have uk car? i know its 14 years old but surly there good for a lot longer??

and surly you would get more than 370 fly hp? i mean thats only 44bhp increase over the stock engine?? there must be some people on here with proper full bpu with real dyno figures! anyone out there who can tell me how much there cars makes with these mods?

ok so m getting closer to a REAL price now(thanks nic) all the parts i havent listed are already on the car!

fcd £80

plugs £50

oyx sensor £150?

i colour £350

1st decat pipe £150

cw/smic £650

fuel filter £ 40?

afr gauge £ 200?

so thats £1670 + fitting! to do a proper job!!

nic let me now if you can get some of these parts at a cheaper price?

also can anyone reccomend which afr gauge?

and how much roughly would you think this would cost to fit say at gbh of colchester?? i think it would be close to £2k all in ??

anything i have missed guys??

would it be also worth fitting a fuel computer? as this was reccomended by bijal, said it allowed for a better and more powerful setup??

The UK spec Supra fuel pump flows 280L/hr, so it should be sufficient (a Walbro would be a downgrade). I can supply new UK Spec pump if you do decide to renew.

The Supra had around 320hp flywheel when new, after 14 years it may be down a bit on power, 375hp would be minimum you should achieve.

The UK spec has 2 oxygen sensors, I can supply these for £85 each.

The i-color will probably be £400+ (I have a second hand one available cheaper if needed).

I can supply fuel filter for £35 including postage

I am about to order one of these AFR gauges for my own car

If you can afford it, then I'd recommend fitting an Emanage Ultimate and getting it mapped by Ian C, this should get you a decent increase in hp (estimate around 20hp)
