Engines...bombproof, but how bombproof?

Just having a look through Autotrader, getting myself upto speed with the prices of a uk spec TT, and I found a red, TT, uk spec one with 210 clicks on the clock and a full service history for £5150.

Now, my question is....are the engines THAT good, or would you avoid like the plague? At 5 grand, i suppose you could drop in a new unit if it went west, but i suppose you have to consider general wear and tear on the other parts.

Any imput is gratefully received.

Will be looking properly as of Feb '05.:)

Are they a reputible firm?

Mate i've actually looked at this car. The guy was nice enough, the car is not all that bad (bodywise it seems excellent for the mileage), however it would not start! despite turning over well.

It did nearly splutter into life once and i made sure i was at the back all the time he was trying and it did puff out a fair bit of blue smoke. This could be worn valve seals and nothing more, or it could be far more serious.

Also noted evidence of oil running into the airbox, not fresh but any sign not good IMO, turbo seals may be going / gone.

Also FSH was not what i'd call it. Majority of stamps were there but no invoices to support the work and also some large 10K+ mile service intervals.

IC was the worst i'd seen, but Rad was recent and coolant fresh.

Even though it was cheap it, it gave me very few good vibes TBH.

Saying that the £1K recon turbo's for sale on here and say £500-750 of labour (say £6500 all in) and it could well be ok, but its not a car that IMO would give you many more trouble free miles as it stands......

Yeah I can second that!

My car is coming up for 160,000 miles (should be in another 300 miles as it goes!) and it still going strong.

I have had head gasket changed/turbo re-con at (128,000 miles) and have just had big ends done at (156,000 miles) and he is still going like a dart!

And for the last 30,000 miles, I have been having regular oil changes (guys go on I know you are gonna take the P!$$ outta me!!)

Sorry Oxy, no offence mate, but that sounds a bit like Trigger's broom in Only Fools and horses. (had the same broom for 25 years, just replaced 14 heads and 12 handles)

AIUI if its had new turbos, new head gasket and new big end bearings, it hasn't really reached 160,000 miles and still going strong :)
