Exhaust noise solution?

ROCKETMAN

Recommended Posts

Hi all, just returned to Supra ownership. I am after advice on the best method to reduce my noisy exhaust system (must be getting old!). Currently fitted is a full RSR exhaust system with double de-cats from Whifbitz. I am finding it just too intrusive. I am willing to sacrifice a bit of performance for a quieter system.

Excuse my ignorance but not sure if the de-cats are more noisy or is it the RSR system, or both.

Would it make any difference if I Dynamatted the interior?

Many thanks.

Dynamatting the whole interior could prove costly. The stuff isn't cheap! There's an alternative you can purchase from places like B&Q called 'Brown Bread'. It's essentially the same stuff just much much cheaper. Might be something to consider.

I'd put one of the cats back in and see how it sounds then. Not sure what others might suggest.

I used a thing called "fatmat" on the rear of the car, stripped out the rear seats and stripped out the boot. Made a significant change in damping down road noise and the RSR I had. If you have an NA an RSR and double decat is going to be freakin' loud even with the baffle in the RSR.

The baffle makes quite a big difference in the noise level. If you don't have one, that'd be the first thing to try. My N/A was undriveable with the baffle removed, the noise was so loud I had to wind the windows down at 60mph otherwise the noise just seemed to pressurise the inside of the car and make your ears bleed!

You think the RSR is loud on a TT, on an NA they will make your ears bleed :)

As said they come with a tail pipe silencer normally, although these tend to reduce the power a little. Other option is to get another silencer fitted on the mid pipe, this should reduce the sound a fair bit without effecting performance.

Just buy a Tanabe Medallion Touring exhaust, they are very quiet, even with both cats out. Making a noisy exhaust is easy, making a quiet one with minimal back pressure is harder and more expensive, but the Tanabe one is excellent. You could fit a stock system, if cost is an issue, I have several mint ones. Tanabe Medallion Tourings I have fitted have come from MVP in the US, at a good price. maybe Nic in Hong Kong can also supply them, I am not sure. My customers have arranged their purchase themselves, and had them shipped to me direct.

Thanks for the advice. Paul at Whifbitz has recommended an HKS silent Hi power. Just wondering if my RSR exhaust would sell no problem to help fund new exhaust.

Start of the Supra spending spree, and I've only owned it 24 hrs!!

Don't think you'll have any problem selling the RSR mate, I love mine, then again I am a loud b*stard anyway :D

anyone got any recomendations where i can get a baffle for mine?

Prob is its a custom exhaust. makes an ace sound. but anything longer than 30 mins driving you you develop a headache.

Have tried envy but because its a custom exhaust they said they couldnt realy do anything. Anyone know who might make them? there is a place near me that does custom exhausts but havent been in there yet.

Would be gratefull if someone could help me out

How can someone love the look of an exhaust, it's just a pipe sticking out the arse end of the car.... ?

True, I'm just a bit of a perfectionist. Why have an immaculate car which is your pride and joy with a piece of rusty old shite poking out the rear. Maybe my attention to detail is OTT...:D

Problem with the normal "baffles" is that they are very restrictive. Spend a grand on a 4" Ti exhaust and stick a 30mm peashooter in it? Joke.

I made a removable silencer from perforated 60mm tube, had some end plates spun and stuffed with fiberglass wadding ala motocross cans.

Took 9DB off my HKS pipe with little restriction.
