Few dog pics with new camera

Boring I know but I've taken a few pics with my new Canon EOS400D and thought I'd share them

I know some people are into their digital photography, I'm new to digital SLR's but so far well impressed. Not even read the instructions and playing at the moment but they are superb bits of kit!

Yeah good pics, and nice looking mutt. I'd like to get a decent camera one day, when i stop spending on the car. I love a bit of photography but my little digicam is fairly limited. :D

Hi mate,

yeah I like that one too. Total fluke, it focused on the ball despite it being in mid air! It was taken as a single frame, not multi so very lucky considering I don't know what I'm doing:d

Great pics mate, no scenery like that around these parts:(

The dog, 'Alfie' is a Rough Collie (lassie type) but the Blue Mearle variety, he's just turned 10 weeks old.

Not as common as the Sable colouring that most people associate with the breed.

Yeah, we had two rough collies a few years back and the two of them seemed to gang up on us at times, great fun having two though watching them play together.

It's difficult being firm without breaking their spirit, after all they are pups and need to play and be little buggers some of the time.

The last pup we had was Sam, a rough collie dog. We thought he was easy to train but then realised that Gemma out 3 year old bitch at the time did 50% of the work in bringing him up well, this time it's down to us alone.

the older one definitely does help, if they are trained well...

Nice shots and nice dog, great camera, I have the same unit.

Which lens are you using, the supplied kit lens?

For some great tips etc sign up here http://photography-on-the.net/forum/

I bought the 400D body only as I already had an old 1000F 35mm and the lenses fit the new digital no problem, I think the range of lenses suitable are the 'EF' type?

I'm using the more standard 35-80mm and also got a Canon Ultrasonic 75-300mm lense:)

The pics above were all taken at some distance with the 75-300.

Thanks for the link, I'll take a look ;)

I really need to get into SLR photography, it's sooo much better! Is it difficult though? And do you need to spend £300+?

I've just been backpacking round South America and saw so many beautiful things that my compact digital camera just couldn't do justice!

I saw a few travellers with an SLR and I bet they got better shots than me.

Not sure about cost, about £450/500 with a lense for the Canon 400D but I didn't look around loads so not sure if there are cheaper alternatives?

I've got a Ricoh compact digital and thought that was good but it lacks the settings and shutter speeds of the SLR's so almost impossible to take action shots. Also the colours always seem to need editing, I spent ages messing around with contrast and colours to get it to look more natural. One of the best things about my new SLR is that the colours are spot on, no further editing required.

Honestly, the difference between these SLR's and normal digital compacts is amazing, I only went to digital for convenience but have always missed the quality that my old SLR gave, now I have both :D

OMG I didn't know you'd got a puppy!! He's so cute!! SO much hair though :) Is he coming to JAE?

Yep :D Had him about 3 weeks now, thought it was about time there was another one around. I can't make it to JAE, unless the training comes on really well and 'Alfie' learns to drive a Supra then he won't be there either :);)

Will try and get him along to a meet sometime though, do you take your dogs along then?
