Mas
Sold an item to someone in ebay who sent a cheque and after 4 days his cheque was cleared so I sent him the item, after a day I received a positive feedback from him and I did the same for him. Now after 48 hours after the cheque has been cleared bloody bank has withdrawn the money out of my account saying his cheque is been canceled therefore its an unpaid cheque !!!!! WTF !! can they do this? thought once the cheque is cleared there is no way/rules to take the money out of the account?!! Correct me if Im wrong. Could be the bank screwed up and where am I standing in this case?!!
Havard
This was a subject in another thread and I never got an answer to the same question!! Surely if the bank has cleared the money then they have to take responsibility for it!! H.

Mas
I called the idiots and she kept telling me its never been cleared!!! I told her to go into my account and have a look at the statement, its been cleared on 3rd April and you took the money out of my account on the 5th ? how can you say its not been cleared? she said I ll call you back on wednesday ? stupid cow. can they actually say they are not going to do anything about this and leave me with nothing ? as this is clearly their faults! markjodrell
I used to sell quite a bit on Ebay. I asked the question re cheques in my bank Lloyds, apparently when you put a cheque in its shows as a credit immediatley, that does not mean that it has cleared though. I asked about the 5 working days to clear issue, this does not exist, they told me a cheque could get mislaid in transit from one bank to naother and could indeed "bounce" after 6 months...No more cheques for me, cash, paypal or postal orders. Postal orders are a rip off so best to send cash , insured and signed for at other end....
Gaz Walker
Hi Mas, Unfortunately the bank can do that as Mark says, anytime upto 6 months! Gaz.

markjodrell
Cheques are NOT worth the paper they are written on. When a cheque "bounces" the banks are simply NOT interested. My Mrs works in a bank and the discussions we have had over this........ If this is the attitude of bank towards cheques they should be outlawed, it must be the easiest way to commit what comes down as fraud at the end of the day.Especially if somebody issues a cheqie and then stops it a day or two later..... Mas
there is something that even the bank can't be sure about it; they say if the blance show something it doesnt mean its available balance which I totally agree, but Im 100% sure it was showin as available balance! and they say in that case it shouldn't have gone if was cleared, as you see they screwed up idiots! the bastard who bought the thing lives in Watford which is not far from me anyway, I smash his door if I dont hear from him till monday! JohnK
I too have had a cheque clear at Lloyds and the funds show as available, then after 2 weeks I get a brown envelope through the post with the cheque in it. Big red stamp across it, saying something like "rejected" and sure enough, the day before they have taken the funds out of my account. Luckily for me the buyer sent funds again straight away and couldnt apoligise enough. If someone sends me a cheque I now wait 2 weeks+ before sending out any goods. Mas
Well I still haven't heard from the bastard, but really going to make his life a shite til he pays the money back, wont let him get away with it even if my bank pays the fee as I think its their bloody error to let idiots like him do what they want to do with peoples money/goods !! No more cheque for me from now on either Havard I ll post up some infos about the events if ever gone that far
Feakins
It's the old fashioned cheque clearing system is what causes this. Cheques can actually take about 12 working days to clear, this is the amount of time it takes to send the cheques off to the banks they were written from, make sure its ok and then transfer the money to the account it was paid in. Banks however realise this is a long time so set a standard clearing time of say 3 working days. So they give you the money when they haven't recieved it and if it then bounces later will just take the money back out! So really you have to give it 2 weeks for a cheque to clear which is pretty shit really.

Homer
Mas, if you have an address then there's plenty of large fella's in the area willing to make a visit. I wouldn't give the the guy anymore warning that you might show up, but may well be worth speaking to one of our friends in the force on here before taking any action. mplavery
this is starting to get very common now...me and my other half were selling a 206 on autotrader and we got a few mgs from ppl abroad saying they were very intersted bying the car for there brother or sister...they are very polite and dnt haggle for price as well...what they wanted to do was to get a mechanic to check the car and pick it up.They also wanted us to pay the mechanic..so what they were doing was giving us £7000 for the car £200 for the mechanic and £300 for our troubles...lol..by sendind a chq in the post..when it clears the mechanic will pick it up that day...well we sent them a mail saying yes for the chq while we were waiting we done our research..we notice this was a scam and the chq clears but then the bank finds out its a fake bank accound and takes the money back...its getting very commen now....they only seem to do it on big amounts.....maybe thats not the case anymore hope this helps anyone......watch out pll !!!!!!!!!!!!!
