DamanC
Finally I have made the jump to DSLR in the form of a 350D Trouble is, i havent a clue how to use it properly! My experiance of photography has been a £200 piont and shoot 4mp compact pentax! However i i think i had mastered it and produced some neet shots http://img481.imageshack.us/img481/6238/imgp08327dw.jpg http://img305.imageshack.us/img305/1369/imgp08679hy.jpg http://img431.imageshack.us/img431/3658/imgp08719iy.jpg The problem is little compact things with a few tweeks are worlds away from DSLR's. My question is where have you guys gone to learn about them. Anyone been on a couple of lessons or perhaps reading some books or websites?
Thorin
Read the manual! Seriously it's a good first step to tell you what everything does, then once you know how the different settings should affect things and experiment. I also read a few digital photo magazines and it's useful with the readers photo's to see what shutter speed and aperture etc settings they used. Bobbeh
You should really learn about all the techniques before splashing out on a fancy camera.. although you'll still produce decent shots with auto mode Best thing to do is just play with it, and research about different techniques, iso speeds and the many other various combos you will have available to you. I've only just started to figure my camera out as its packed with so many options and I've had it for about 2 years now! Good choice of camera btw
terribleturner
I started to read the manual, but i always find just sitting down with the camera and having a fiddle with it. You'll learn it inside out and what to use when etc.....
michael
Nice pics but they don't seem much better than a budget IXUS could manage - I'm amazed at how many people on here are willing to go from a basic camera to a fancy DSLR without really having much experience of photography But at least you've picked a camera with plenty of scope for learning, as Thorin says have a read of the manual and if there are any words you don't understand step back to "Photography for Dummies" and pick up the basics so you can apply them to your new fangled gadget

carl0s
My Nikon came with a fabulous manual. It explained the relationship between aperature and shutter speed, allowing varying depths of field, and lots of other things of course.
DamanC
Aye, those were taken with a compact I should have said, ive been experimenting with a couple of techniques; http://img372.imageshack.us/img372/2668/imgp1202ow7.jpg http://img390.imageshack.us/img390/1675/imgp1125ix8.jpg Im crap, but not that crap The 350D is a apparently a good choise for n00bs of the DSLR world, and has pleanty of features packed in that eventually ill get my head round
Muffleman
Nice camera the 350D Got the E-500 myself a little while ago and love it. Have fun mate, and I'm afraid I'm similar to James, read a couple of pages of the manual then chucked that back in the box and then took loads of pics getting used to various settings etc. Great thing with digital cameras is it costs you bog all to experiment

Supradoopa
You can read the manual umpteen times but it all comes down to the basic principles of Photography how the eye reads a photo etc. Have a look at the rule of thirds and compositional aides like frame within a frame, perspective etc to really get a good photo.
