Just had interview

Ok so I've had a phone interview and they want me to come in for a face to face on Wednesday.

Thing is, I wasn't given a specific job spec before the call and now it turns out that it is as part of a 24/7 cover team working in shifts of 12 hours... anyone work in this kind of environment? What is it like does it really disrupt everything?

I work 12 hour shifts Rosie. Having worked an 8 hour 6 week pattern for 12 yrs or so, a 12 hr shift has been a revelation for me. Shift working and nights isn't for everyone though, and you'll always start a rest day from a night duty so that 1st day is a right off in some respects.

However I couldn't even contemplate working a normal Mon- Fri

with only two days off, I much prefer compressed hours and 4 or 5 days off at a stretch, 2 weekends off in 4 and working 14 shifts out of 28 days :D

If you want me to send you my shift pattern let me know.:)

I do 4 on 4 off. The nights are not to bad if you can keep busy at work and manage to sleep during the day. The first night is always bad as its a normal day for you then you have to go and do a long night shift. As class one said its defo not for everyone and it will not suit everyones lifestyle and it can put a strain on family life. If the pay is good & you are interested then i would go for it if I was you, for the experience if nothing else.

I did 12hr shifts, 4 days, 4 off, 4 nights etc for 6 months and hated it.

I just couldn't get into the routine. Could never sleep during the day, and was always tired on the night shift. Didn't have anything to do which didn't help, I was being paid to sit in a small room and watch two screens of alarms, that were always emtpy. I also worked Christmas day, which I'll never do again, although the drive to work in the morning was HUGE fun :)

i done it for years.used to do 12 hour shifts 5 days a week.then we went onto 8 hour shifts.now we do 3 12 hour shifts a week so get plenty of time off.im on my 8 day break now.all i have to do is book 3 days holidays at right time and get 2 weeks off.

its good as you dont have to go into work everyday.8 hours is good but i found myself waiting to go into work.on 12 hours when you busy time flys by.

I'm also on shift at the Mo.

Currently I do 3 on and 3 off, 12 hours shifts and I love it.

Nights can be a bit of a mess, but as was said, if you can keep yourself busy, it's not too bad.

In my 19yrs of work, I think I've only done 3yrs top off of shift.

My fav was a 5 week shift pattern with 7 days off in the middle.

Just think, no more shopping at the weekend with the rest or the muppets.. (No offence to 99% of people on here :))

Hmm. Ok I might call the agent and ask him if there are more details on exactly what the shifts will be.

I'm concerned about a)sleeping during the day, it may sound weird but I don't think theres a chance in hell that the dogs will allow that, they will be awake and that will be that!!

Just got back from interview, it seemed to go well.

He seemed mostly impressed that I could hold a conversation, it would seem that most "techies" he meets can't.

Equally he asked me 10 techy questions and I knew 8 of them, the other 2 were guesswork but one was half way there at least!!! haha.

Still not sure about these shifts though. 3 days on 3 off.

If they offer me something, what should I do? I don't want to take it then change my mind, equally I don't want to say no then have nothing else and have no income. Argh!!
