TT not as fast as i expacted, comperad to my NA

Hi

My friend just bought a TT Aerotop. So it tryed it out since i will buy one next week to (sold my NA).

The thing is i got very dissapointed to the power output of this car, i can swear it aint so much faster then my NA, i wish i had it right now to run them to eash other.

First i though that only one turbos works, cuz of a small kick at 5k rpm coming in. But when i let of the throttle at 3-4k i hear the BOV, so i guess thats the boost from the first turbo, so ok both works.

The car got HKS Downpipe (so first cat is gone) the second cat is still in though, and after that comes the Buddyclub exhaust. It also got HKS air intake.

That should be all mods, anyway looking at those mods i made a conclusion before i tested the car that it must go past 1bar, and since it does not have any FCD or BCC fitted i was expecting the Fuel Cut to come in (read that it will feel like driving into a wall, no boosting for 5 sec or so).

So i went of, holding down the throttle all the way, and no boost cut came in, tubbies spool all the way until i hit the speed limit at 180kph.

So if the fuel cut does not come in, then i guess its not even making 1 bar of boost right, that would explaine why it feels so slow.

I mean relly im not even used to fast cars, hell the fastest car i ever driven is my NA 230hk. And from this TT i did not even get a kick when the tubbies come on, i just hear them spool but i cant feel the car pull away or anything.

Oh worh to mention is that the turbos went boom on the previous owner, so it got new steel ball bearing turbos. I guess then that the potiential of this car is good when it comes to it being able to run 1.3 bars or something, aint no ceramics here to hold it back.

Told him to get

BCC

BC

Second decat

1.3 bars recstrictor ring (since his turbos should be able to take this without problem)

Boost gauge meters.

Colder spark plugs

And in the future

Fuel pump

IC

So what do you gues think about this, would like this thread to be aopenminded so just speak out, you could begin with how it was when you first drove a TT, was you just as dissapointed as i am ?, or am i expecting to much out of this car.

I don't think the steel turbos run as freely as the ceramic ones so you may need a boost controller to increase?

Also - with it being a bit warm I'm hitting a max of 1.1 at the mo which would be a couple of points higher in the winter.

The obvious thing to look for first is boost leaks I guess.

From my NA I was dissapointed with my first stock TT, but certainly not by the VVTi BPU.

You really should notice the difference so there must be a problem. Like Pete says I would check for boost leak. If you're not too technical then try taking it to a rolling road and getting a engineer to look over it.....

If there is a surge at 5000rpm then I'd say something ain't right. Boost leak check then it's VSV's etc.

yeah you should not feel a "small kick" at 5k rpm it should feel more like 2 footed tackle by Roy Keane at 4k rpm, something dont sound right

Wow, boost leak, that was new.

So how do you check if there is boost leak.

Well actually, when i do floor the throttle at 3k rpm, it just flys directly to 5k and almost in the end of 6k, i feel that small kick, car is an auto.

Cant say i noticed anything in between 3-5k rpm, no pulls or anything, but i hear the turbo spool though.

There is no boost gauge installed (display meter).

Fit a boost gauge and tell us how the reading changes as revs increase. You can easily plumb up a cheap mechanical gauge temporarily.

not sure how the auto feels but my manual doing say 1,500 rpm in second, foot down, first turbo starts to whistle then kicks in at 2,000 rpm and pulls nicely up to just before 4,000 rpm, then the power lets off ever so slightly before a massive serge at 4,000 rpm (as Paul Mac nice put;) ) which doesn’t let off at all till hitting the rev limiter.

a BPU supra just exaggerates this compared to a standard supra but along those lines.

Even a bog standard supra TT will scare the shit out of you if you've never been in one before and as your mates supra didn't then theres definitely something not right with it.

...Please note i've never been in a N/A but have raced one and in my opinion there is a very noticable difference in power.

Thanks for the info, great guide also, seems easy.

But need to ask, where do he put in the vacum hose in the engine, i cant relly tell from the pic.

If anyone have a better pic please put it up.

And there is so many boost gauges in ebay, i guess some are more relaible then others, is there anyone in particular that you recommend.

One that alredy shows in bar would be good.
