morgaine
Hi all, Will a 95 J-spec pass MOT with both cats removed? If not, which one is best removed? And is it really worth removing one or both cats till I can afford a cat back exhaust? Cheers Morg
Marco
Your car will not pass MOT without the cats. I have 2 cats removed, and its definatly worth it. More power! When MOT comes up, I have 1 cat put back in, and then take it out again after...
Roy
hmm, why do i not have that problem ? oohhh, fully decatted btw ......... my 2p - find a 'friendly' MOT garage
Supragal
This issue seems to be a bit of a grey area. A UK car of that age shouldn't pass with no cats BUT the jspec seems to be a different kettle of fish. I presumed it was the same and a case of finding a Supra friendly garage, however one of the engineers here runs a garage and they are an approved MOT station. He has an rx7 so I asked him about the decat thing, he said that they input the vehicles chassis number and the system tells them what level the car should be, however, inputting a jap chassis number means the system can't find it so they test it as a non cat car (as it doesn't have any) Regardless of if anyone disputes this I know where I'll be taking mine!! outatime
My local garage failed my 1993 jap de-cat. They even phoned the MOT people to check the computer was right in failing it. I got it through with both cats in the end, just find a friendly MOT tester...
Thorin
I have both cat's out and my car sailed through its MOT
morgaine
Cheers for the info - that's pretty much what I suspected. I think Supragal's got a good point there - how do they check what the emissions are meant to be on an import. And Thorin - how the hell d'ya manage that? Do you think your MOT guy wants another customer

morgaine
Aren't they those things you rip out and chuck in the bin, if you can do it without shooting a piston through your bonnet
