RLTC Questions

How good is the RLTC? Very

Does it make a massive difference? Yes

Does it help when launching up the strip? N/A

Can anyone who has it fitted tell me there thoughts....

 

I once showed my son what happened when you turned off the RLTC and fishtailed down a road for about 50 yards. Did the same run with the RLTC back on and had no issues - enough said!

It's an awesome bit of kit. I booted it out of a junction with bouncing rain and standing water and it handled Mr Single Turbo quite nicely. You get a suprising rate of acceleration in adverse conditions with it doing all the difficult bits!

 

With my setup I've had it cut in in 3rd gear in the dry and 4th in the wet on low boost so imagine what a 'mare it'd be driving the damn car without RLTC. All very manly and hairy chested yes, but at the end of the day I want to enjoy the car, not be scared of it until 5th gear!

 

It makes the car fun to drive. Can't recommend it highly enough. Probably a bit shit for the drag strip with sticky tyres though, but it was good set to 20% slip on street tyres at TOTB4 :) You can always turn it off. It can still slide sideways though as you are on the grip limit so don't ever rely on it 100% or think it'll defeat the laws of physics.

I was thinking about RLTC today and was going to ask a question, so here goes.

 

Presumably, if one floors the accelerator with full steering lock on (as I like to do from a standstill on 90 degree turns every now and then), the RLTC won't save you from going sideways because of the amount of intertia in the turn, right? In that situation, you'd only need a moments slip and the car would start its slide wouldn't it?

 

Or not?

Not sure how well the DAT file in my RLTC is...but what I can say is that it has saved my arse many many times.....sure, it doesnt turn the car into a 4WD tractionator....nevertheless, it does make is a lot more controllable.

Like you say Carl, it's all about inertia. You're relying a lot on the grip of your tyres.

If you're batting along at 60 and do a sudden turn you've still got masses of forward momentum so will slide.

Just to present the argument for not having RLTC...In the past, I've seriously considered having it installed. I have absolutely no doubt that it would make my car safer and more capable.

 

However, I think having the ability to predict and control slip with my right foot is important. Surely RLTC takes away the need for this to some extent?

 

I wouldn't want to get into another powerful car and wrap it round a tree due to expecting the same level of traction control as RLTC.

 

Obviously, I'm in the minority here :)

True James...but you are aware that the RLTC offers over 5 settings of TC and can also be turned off...

 

Yes I am, and in fact my job involves writing electronic control strategies such as traction control :) But I still don't like the idea of too many driver aids. I want my car to be challenging to drive - and rewarding when I get it right. If I wanted the fastest point-to-point car, I'd buy a Skyline or an Evo rather than a Supra.
