I can build anything so am willing to help.

All I need is a personal break down of your finances and what you spend your money on; basically any internal information I don't really need so I can strike a deal with you.

P.s I can also clean cars better than you can :D

I'm a qualified time served pipe fabricator in my past life prior to my back injury . so accuracy was and is the main point of my job . kind of took that attitude into my detailing . so whether these guys pick up on that when I'm on the phone to them I don't know , and think sod that hes to fussy , because basically I know what I want and have drawn it up with all the measurements. kind of done that bit for them . but due to my back I just cant dig and move the material , otherwise id do it myself . plus its not a big job probably two days if that

All trades seem to be the same now, moved into a new build in August and I've asked the landscape guys for a fencing quote, sparky for some more downlights, plumber for additional outside tap / water softener. NONE of them get back to me, asked months back and nothing.

Might have something to do with getting reputation for knowing what I'm on about, not a bad quality build by todays standards but still managed to create a long list of snagging on some major items. Not been too 'fussy' but in their view they are either giving me a wide berth or just don't need the money/lazy b*stards ???

I think you will find its the same with bigger jobs too , I'm restoring an old (1824) building close to where you are , big problems getting builders who know what they are doing , lime motor and plaster work , stonework , etc , let alone turn up .

After about a year , it seems DIY is the only way forward , even the electrical instal is problematic , I'm fitting a modern DALI lighting system , but it seems that no "electricians " have a scooby do about modern lighting systems , I'm having to explain how it works and should be wired , but I can't sign it off that's got be done by electrician who does not know how it all works - go figure

Render / insulation I'm using Bauwer light , a modern insulation system , but plasterers know nothing about it , I'm having to explain ..

So I've had electricians , plasterers, carpenters , all who don't know their own trades , now followed up by heating engineers , structural engineers and architects who also don't know their trades - it's the modern way ..... Provide poor skills levels at outrageous prices if you can be bothered to turn up at all ......

I'm sure there are quality builders about , it's just they are massively outnumbered and you don't know who they are ,everyone has a mobile phone , builders have special phones with no date or clock on them and they only accept incoming calls , sometimes -lol

Oh yeah, I've caught Building Control out too, building plans (and my experience) says that Intumescent sealer is required around the edge of the garage plasterboard ceiling to maintain it's fire rating. There was none, I got the Building Control guy back to check and he agreed, when asked how he could sign off the build he just said he 'must have missed it' and doesn't see every stage of the build ?? Why have Building Control then eh ?

Peter, my thoughts are that most of the Trades on site are not at the top of their game, it's all price work and they get away with 'mistakes' or not knowing. Doing stuff in bulk on a new build with easy access to put services in is a different ball game to doing an individual job where neatness and a tidy/proper job is crucial.

Also the Great British public are to blame, many are generally less knowledgable than they were years ago, many on this new estate wouldn't know a good job if it smacked them in the face and even if you highlight mistakes they are scared to complain or not bothered, more interested in sorting out their crappy garden solar lights :D

I can do most of this myself and make a better job of it in most cases but it takes me longer as I have to research materials and methods in some cases, it's something I do enjoy but I just wish there were some decent reasonably priced builders around this area to take the load off me a bit.

Aggregates in smaller quantity aint so bad, one tonne bags delivered next to the area and slice open with a stanley knife. What about hiring a mini digger for a day or isn't it a big enough area to warrant one? Last time I looked they were about £90 a day to hire and easy to drive.

I think ill see if I can find someone to do the digging

I've often said it would be a good idea to have a website purely for the advertising of unskilled work, labouring etc.

Offered and wanted sections. You go on there and place an ad along the lines of "labourer needed for digging driveway, 1-2days work next week, £XX/per day, lunch and biscuits included" anyone who wants it can then respond.

All cash in hand. You get stuff done, someone gets quick easy money.

I could do with the same for my garden. Need plenty of digging but don't want to pay for gardening/landscaping people when all I really need is a big eastern European bloke with a spade.

As I'm too tight to pay for water this seams a good way to get a free seasonal bath in.

Stand outside the job centre with flyers ? I'm sure some young lad would be up for a bit of cash in hand, I dug out footings for a garage when I was a youngster for a bloke round the corner. Hard work but cash in hand and plenty of tea and bacon sarnies :-)
