Guest mentalfx
I admit to not knowing much about the technicalities of cars but I know a lot about search engines. Did a search for supra owners club on google and noticed this site was second, not bad of course but there's an easy way to get it to the top. All that has to be done is to remove the splash page and make the current second page the index page. Because it is full of supra related keywords it will have a much higher ranking than the current index page. Probably within two weeks the site will go to the top and will be indexed more frequently. Have recommended this to a few clients and they have all seen excellent results and moved up the listings considerably if not to the top. Well, just felt the need to share this info as I've learnt a lot from you guys and wanted to return the favour. Duane.
Bobbeh
Whats currently top? Couldnt the keywords just be added to the splash page?
tbourner
Cool, where's branners when you need him!
Guest mentalfx
yeah the keywords could be added to the current index page which might do the job. However, google loves dynamic pages and would decrease the time between indexes. A couple of years back google had trouble indexing dynamic php pages like forums etc but they've sorted that out now. Also within a couple of months the google page ranking would most likely go up to 4 and maybe 5 depending on the quality of the inbound links. far
mental fx - great tip, would the same apply for this website ? http://www.asiashow.co.uk would it be worth getting rid of the front page for the search engines to work better ?

Yeah the same applies with that site. You would see a big difference in a matter of weeks if not days. It will also increase the effectiveness of all the keywords scattered around the rest of the site. The first page and the keywords within it are the most important to google. Splash pages do your search listings no favours at all, not just for google by the way.

Bobbeh
I said when it was being discussed that the splash page wasnt the best idea.. I remember when I was at uni they were talking about websites generally saying that splash screens actually put loads of people off clicking any further into your website, although that was mainly talking about ecommerce, I can see what they mean. People want to put in a URL and get straight into it.
Guest mentalfx
Yeah for ecommerce sites a splash page is a definate no no and would lose maybe 30% of visitors. For this site it wouldn't be a problem if not for search engine rankings, maybe 10% of visitors would hit the back button but personally I like a splash page for this kind of site. But the search engine says no. Another thing that would help search engine rankings on this site would be to have links to the lastest posts like the latest topics which are already on the main page. And another thing would be to have a glossary or terms page, maybe there is but not seen it. Then link to it from the main page with some thing like "glossary of supra terms". Keywords in the links are very important for optimum search engine results. Even inbound links from other sites, this is why it's good practice to have a "link to us page" with specific code already ready for other webmasters to use. The code should obviously have the correct keywords. Also banners should be accompanied by a text link with the keywords in. i.e. "The mkiv Supra owners club for (more keywords)." This will increase the google ranking for those keywords when searched on.
mawby
Well I can remove the splash page easy enough. I'll do it now... but if the site goes down don't blame me!

Guest mentalfx
yeah that's it, nice one. Now the main page has a google ranking of 3 whereas before it was 2 or nothing depending the url. This means all the keywords on the main page will also be ranked higher and so on throughout the site. Give it a week or so and you'll own google for supra keywords. Supragal
I've just typed "Supra" and we don't even appear on the first page. Will that improve? supra owners club is 2nd mkiv supra is top supra forum we are nowhere. How do we improve that?
Bobbeh
Ask Diamond Graphics cards to drop the name of one of their chipsets 'Toyota Supra' could be improved upon
Guest mentalfx
yeah for supra you'll improve on that also but to get on the first page of google you'll need a google page ranking of 5 or might scrape it with 4. This will take a few months though I would think as you way down the list. Supra forum is easier to get better listings for. All you have to do is change the title of the site in the forum settings to "The mkiv Supra Owners Club Forum". The title of the page is the most important with keywords at the top of the page coming close second. Then there is inbound links to add to the equation but that's a bit out of your control. Just incase you have no clue what I'm talking about when I say google page ranking, you will need the google bar for your browser. You can get it from the google site for free and it also blocks popups and is generally quite handy.
Guest mentalfx
Ask Diamond Graphics cards to drop the name of one of their chipsets 'Toyota Supra' could be improved upon yeah there's not much chance of getting to the top for supra but first page is possible with time. Guest mentalfx
oh yeah, you currently have http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb as your main folder, changing vbb to supra-forum or supraforum would also help.
mawby
oh yeah, you currently have http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb as your main folder, changing vbb to supra-forum or supraforum would also help.Really? Does the search ranking calculation also take into account the url? So (purely for example sakes) www.mkivsupra.net/supra/forum/supraforum/mkivsupra/forum/supra/forum would be better still?
Guest mentalfx
Yeah having the keywords in the url will help. Looking at it logically, I would think that only the last directory in the path and the filename would count and anything before that would be ignored but who knows for sure?! Wouldn't go too over board though as google may take points off.

Jay
Just to solidify that mentalfx is talking sense here, my company deals with search engine marketing also, and his recommendations are spot on I'm pretty sure VBB has a "Search Engine Friendly" URL's modification too, that will help. In fact if you cruise the VBB community boards, you can find out all kinds of useful information on improving rankings. Also, is it just me or does this site have barely any incoming links? mentalfx can you shed any light on this?
