Fancy some bonnet gas struts???

You'll have to measure up someone else's struts, and they come fullt pressurised so you'll probably have to bleed off some of the pressure unless you want your bonnet flying off :D

 

But they are CHEAP..... and the brackets are available too for this or any custom job etc

 

They also do stainless ones for quite a bit more..... but then the bling factor always costs ££ more ;)

Yeah, you'd need to know what the force is of new stock ones. Then you could opt for the fixed pressure ones which are cheaper than the variable ones :D

 

If anyone has a means of measuring??? Maybe some accurate bathroom scales and new strut?

Gary,

 

If you can measure:

 

D - The fully extended length of the whole strut from centre to centre of the ball type swivels

 

'Stroke' - The stroke fully extended (preferably off the car if possible?)

 

B - The length of the body (up to the start of the swivel fitting)

 

The diameter of the body and the diameter of the piston rod (shown as 18mm and 8mm in the diagram).

 

Also the force required to compress one..... on a bathroom scale will be ok, in Kg. Probably best to measure the force needed once its started moving as the break free force will be higher than the constant force as it starts moving.... if that makes sense?

On that page is all the relevant data sheets, so maybe forward the info to the company Kranz posted and they will do an exact copy for a cheaper price ;)

The variable pressure ones needed would be the SD02-200 and the pressure would need adjusting to suit each bonnet type. These are virtually the same as the RS ones, but are £3 cheaper per pair! Also this company accepts Paypal, and RS needs an account (I think).

 

The strut comes with ball ends that would fit the body side, and the bracket for the bonnet would probably be the 'Rod End Bracket Steel Ball - Type 6' one. The centre to centre distance for the mounting bolts for this is 38mm.... anyone know what the bolt centre measurements are that are used for the bonnet bracket?

The steel ball/pin thing will need reversing so that is sticks out the right way, I hope that is is reversable..... but as the bracket is only £3 then its not a big issue.

So, the list of parts is:

 

2 x Gas Struts - SD02-200***

2 x Rod End Fitting Steel Ball - SBJ2

1 x Rod End Bracket Steel Ball - Type 6

Total cost £43.68

Delivery £6.50

+ Vat @ 15%

 

For a fixed rate strut use the FSD02-200 with the same options as above. The rate to be set will be 450N if gary's measurements are correct. This is for a stock bonnet. A fibreglass or carbon fibre bonnet may need less force, so the variable dampers will be a better option as the force can be reduced by bleeding off the gas in the units..... but as they are only £1 less per unit than the variable ones, is it worth it? :D
