dude
Why do we have to use the £30 a litre toyota oil in the 6 spd gearbox ????? Discuss Dude
Keith C
Yes. Apparently the seals will deteriorate if you don't.
dude
Why not normal ATF at 1/5 the cost ??? Dude
imi
Keeps Toyota in business.... Good Question...not sure whether all this about NOT using V160 Oil is heresay or fact. I have however heard it from several sources so ended up dishing out £60 for 2 Ltrs
dude
Why have the last 3 6 spds ive worked on had a factory sticker saying 'USE ATF OIL ONLY ' Dude
imi
Toyota in Isleworth recommended Esso Gearbox oil for the Supra. I was the one who said it required specific gearbox oil that was recommended by Toyota themselves
dude
I wonder if OILMAN can get the specified oil examined to see if its ATF or not cause £60 is a serious rip for that amount of oil if it just ATF !!!! Dude
Ian C
I think there has been at least three people who chopped out their "just ATF" oil for the pukka V160 oil and had instanto results - easier shifting when cold and less clunking and no grinding. One guy I think couldn't even get into 2nd until it had warmed up and then it went in fine once V160 was in. It lasts for aeons doesn't it? And it's the lifeblood of your beefy Getrag... I'd personally use the V160 stuff, same as I use Toyota ForLife and Valvoline Synpower and Optimax and Pirelli and Motul..... -Ian
normore1
The toyota V160 oil is just Esso Dextron II ATF fluid repackaged in Japan and then imported. The Toyota manual specifies two oils: the V160 and Esso Dextron II ATF. A number of people have used other fluid including Royal Purple and Mobil1 ATF. To my knowledge the only fluid known to cause problems in the Supra V160 6-speed is Red Line MTB which due to excessive seal swell agent caused the bushing in the gear selector to stick and not recenter automatically. Zed
I think I asked Oilman about this a while back on the forum. Even told him that the same gearbox was used in the Lotus Carlton, Porsche 968 and I believe the skyline R34 uses the getrag V160 as well. It would be interesting to find out the oils that these other manufacturers reccommend and how much they charge for it.
Keith C
One thing I recall being told was that there are additives in the V160 oil over normal Dexron II, and that seals and synchros can and have failed with non-V160 fluid. Frankly, at just £50 every 36,000 miles, I'd rather not take a chance.
dude
Its very strange that ive just ordered some from Toyota and there is none in the country !!! I wonder what they use if dont have any , Im going to get it analised and ill bet that there is no difference to ATF oil at all Dude
Dragonball
When you get some let me have a bit of the stuff m8 (brown paper envelope will be fine - loads of sellotape around the edge etc! LOL!) - I'll get it down to the Royal Purple guys in Cornwall and see what they come up with!
dude
I'll stick some in the post dude in a small bottle , the 160 oil looks , feels and smells the same as ATF and you know what they say , if it looks like a duck , sounds like a duck and feels like a duck , its prob a duck !!!! Ian C
Just get it analysed by someone who doesn't sell a cheaper analogue otherwise you may be unsuprised that it turns out their stuff is exactly the same and oh look, it's on offer -Ian

Clarkey
How often should the gearbox oil be changed ? Mine is done every 6K miles. Is that overkill ?
ewizzy
Every 6k with the V160 oil Dont toyota recommend every 36k ?
Zed
Every 6K is definitely overkill. BTW just couldn't resist to point this out, Dude, your statement sound seriously painful; Im going to get it analised and ill bet that there is no difference
oilman
Dexron II is Dexron II, it's a GM spec. Unless something else is added it's a very common oil sold in most motor factors for not a lot of money. Cheers Simon
