Supra engine in Rx7

Had an enquiry about doing this on an FD over the weekend. Off the top of my head, work and issues :-

Most of the conversion kits ive seen are developed for LHD cars, so, when installing the 2jz/1jz you may run into serious clearance issues with a stock TT setup on a right hooker. Mainly due to clearance with the steering linkage/rack and maybe the brake servo (FD bay is tight as is). So a single tubby conversion maybe needed

Wether you running a 2jz or 1jz you will need an r154 gearbox, 1jz r154 bell housing, 1jz flywheel, 1jz clutch kit, custom extension housing for the gear stick to locate to original position, and a custom prop shaft.

Wiring using 2jz/1jz loom and ecu should be stright forward enough with a little felting around the charging and starting systems, main issues would be with driving the stock rx7 gauges from toyota sensors and also some sort of custom speed sensor/converter setup for the speedo. (If money wasnt an object the maybe standalone such as motec and an ADL dash)

Custom PS lines, maybe custom rad, rad coolant pipes, custom intercooler and piping setup

2jzswap.com do all the parts to make it plug and play, there kit does fit RHD cars and there is a gearbox relocating part in the kit, for the r154 box. They also sell separate digital boxes for the speedo and tach for the 7, an intercooler kit and a radiator kit. Anyway this info can be found on the 2jzswap forum.

"Ok guys, here is a quick rundown of all the things you will need for the conversion, All of these items can be purchased in one spot.... http://www.tech2motorsports.com

Swap kit

JZ engine set your choice of tranny

Wiring Service

Intercooler kit

Radiator Kit

Hose kit

PS kit

Dakota Boxes for Speedo and Tach

A/C is optional but is best to opt for it when the wiring is being done!

All pricing is available on the website and there are many other lil things you may or may not need to complete your swap. This is just a base list to get your swap in the car.

I always reccomend that you service the engine before you put it in, ie seals and gaskets. Better to do it before you put it in.

be the first one in the uk and imo 2jz one of the best if not the best jap engines for reliability and easy tuning then stick it into a lightweight rx7;) not much going to touch you especially if its a single turbo...

watch paul whiffin build one now for time attack lol

Might not be Paul building this but another member of the Team Garage Whifbitz crew!!! :innocent:;)

Excellent :)

Would make a superb track car.

That's what i'm hoping Gaz mate! :D:eyebrows:

Should eliminate the one weakness the RX7 has namely reliability as we have had LOTS of 13B's since running these in Time Attack at considerable cost!

Have already sourced the rolling shell thanks to Carl Hayward at Hayward Rotary and now saving the pennies for the conversion kit from the US although will wait for the exchange rate to improve!!;)

Will then be on the lookout for a damaged TT to get my engine and a few bits.

It'll be an awesome build but won't be an overnighter as I have the mortgage etc to consider first and foremost so will get done as time and funds allow!

are you going for a 2JZ rather than a 1JZ then? is so why? :)

I have a 1JZ engine, carrillo rods, ferrea valves and ARP headbolts so far for my conversion but I may sell the lot

Hi mate.

Was thinking 2JZ as more familiar with them having supported three Supra's in Time Attack over the past couple of years with no issues and good power, and it's a more common engine here in the UK.

Would consider a 1JZ though for the obvious weight saving subject to finding one for the right money! :search::eyebrows:

Out of interest, where did you source yours? Guessing these are fitted to certain Soarers??

If you do decide to sell up mate drop me a PM with what you want for your setup as would be interested and would save me some time! ;):D

Might be a struggle for funds as busy saving at the moment but might be able to do something!

Cheers.

yeah mainly out of the soarers but it did come in some import mk3 supras, chasers and quite a few others!, I had a soarer earlier in the year which had a fubard cam/cam journal so I bought another head/cams and was going to rebuild the engine too.

i'll let you know :)

I put a thread up about 1jz/2jz engine into fd rx7 on mazda rotary club they didnt like it at all lol, they came back with things like "just buy an old supra then," and apparenty the chevy ls1 v8 is lighter than the 1jz,2jz ?

Anyway i still like the idea of doing this, tom if you are thinking of selling your 1jz i could be interested possibly.

my soops going next week and if I clear space i'll prob go ahead with doing the JZ swap, so i'll prob keep the parts i've collected so far, we'll see though :) it wont be starting for a few months yet :)

the "just buy an old supra then"

yeah I can understand the guys on there not wanting to part with their rotary but the v8going in there just doesnt sound right! it's got to be a jap engine in there! also still to date the RX7 is the best overall car i've driven so that mated up with a legendary engine will be one awesome machine!

I've decided to go 2JZ so will be good to see how they turn out and any differences as I know the weight is greater for the 2JZ but apparently most of the difference is the twin turbo setups which doesn't count if you go single (the 2JZ twins weigh a lot more than the 1JZ ones).

This is a VERY long term project for me as the list of things ahead of this are growing: Kitchen, Bathroom, update the family estate etc etc etc!!!;)

That and the mortgage and bills plus the recession means a 5 year build unless circumstances change!

Will be an awesome machine when it's done though.

Pete :)
