I got some great advise on here before i went to Vegas, so i thought i'd ask again. Im going to stay for about 4/5 nights at the end of august with about 4 friends and was wondering first off, where the best areas/hotels to stay in are as from what i've heard their can be some pretty rough places there.

I personally really enjoyed Huntington Beach area and/or Long Beach.

Nice hotels that wont KILL your budget i think in Huntington Beach is the Hilton Waterfront or in Long Beach we stayed at the Reannisance Hotel by Marriott. Both hotels are like right off the beach/port. Very nice scenary and are about a 30 minute to 1 hour drive to LA.

I spent three nights there a few years back. Stayed in the Hollwood area, in the hotel where the first Academy Awards were held - I forget the name but it’s the same place that the final scenes of the second Charlie's Angels film were shot - directly opposite the Chinese theater on the walk of fame. Was expecting it to be pretty swanky.

It wasn't. What a dump that whole area is. The first thing I saw on the TV when I turned it on was news report about a newly married local couple getting shot in their home that morning. The cab drivers (if I could actually speak to them through the layers of plexiglass and steel wire) seemed to love telling me how many of their mates had been shot or stabbed recently - then one of them ripped me off by saying they couldn't give me the right change even though I was going to tip him. Don't go to Venice Beach out of season or intsead of bikini-clad lovelys all you'll get is a load of bums (the other kind) trying to get your spare change off you.

Oh - and on the way back to the airport, the taxi driver (actually a limo driver, but the shiteiest limo I'ne ever seen) decided to drive through "the hood" and suddenly turned off the road and on to one of those odd vacant waste-ground spaces the Americans seem to have under flyovers. When I asked him where he was taking me, he said he thought there was a shortcut there, but must have been mistaken. I've never been so sure I was going to get robbed and killed before or since.

The areas the posters above are describing sound much nicer - I'd stick to those. I certainly have no plans to go back!

I found places outside of LA cool, actual LA was like tooting high road with the odd splatter of glitz, Rodeo drive was like Bond st & the walk of fame was not ok but nothing to write home over. But you should go to the studios and get a tour, ive heard their seaworld is good & san diego zoo.

I love LA, last time I went I stayed at the Four Seasons on Rodeo Drive, which was very nice but bedroom window just showed me a dingy alley.

I also found everyone really really nice, ate at Planet Hollywood(the first one to be built) every night, as it was virtually opposite the hotel and the food was brilliant. I also went up to Universal Studios which is great fun(Much better than the Disney Land one) Everytime I got a taxi the drivers were really nice and very easy to chat to, most of them gave me a discount and a couple of them only charged me $10 for around a $30 trip.

Personally, I would recommend it.

I just got back from California mate.

Did LA, San Fran, Vegas, Yosemite, Death Valley and Monterey. LA was brilliant. If you stay in Santa Monica I guarantee you won't be disappointed. Downtown isn't great but santa monica is brilliant. Lovely beaches, good bars, great club called Ruby Skyes and friendly people. We stayed at the Cal Mar hotel.

San Fran is wey overrated if you ask me, we spent 4 days there but you only need a max of 2.

All bars/clubs stop serving alcohol in San Fran and LA at 2am by the way.

Agree with the SF brigade its a nice city. Coastal route LA to San Fran via Carmel & Monterey, then up to Lake Tahoe, these are all cool places.

Absolutely. Monterey was good and we went to the Acquriaum there too. SF is nice but I just think after a couple of days there's not much else to do there, it's not really a bustling city but a nice getaway. We were there over July 4th ID.

Definitely do the costal Pacific 1 highway route. Sadly we managed half and got re-routed onto the 101 Freeway because of the Wildfires which I believe are still ongoing.

"L.A. is a great big magnet, put a hundred down and buy a car.

In a week maybe two they will make you a star."

Bonus point to who spots the song first.

:p

Dianne warwick - do you know the way to san jose

But isn't it "L.A. is a great big freeway"

What do I win:d
