Power-steering pump broken?

Hi All,

 

This has probably been posted before somewhere on the forum but I can't find it anywhere, so appologies if it's a re-post.

 

Everytime I start the supe, it gives it large in the form of a loud (IMO) whining. I can hear it coming from the left hand side of the engine bay, so assuming this is the power-steering pump.

 

It get's louder as I turn the wheel, then calms down again. But here's the thing, after driving about 5 mins it stops! Then it is completely fine while I'm using it for the day unless it is left for a few hours.

 

It has only just started happening within the past 3-4 days. It's getting really annoying as when I start the car, everyone looks at it but for the wrong reasons!

 

I'm hoping the pump is not knackered and it is only air in the system or needs a fluid top up, but won't get a chance to check this until tomorrow. Has anyone experianced this before? Also, if it is air in the system, whats the best way to bleed it?

I too had this problem and it just didnt have enough fluid in it so check the level before you go to the trouble of bleeding it as i was going to bleed it but as soon as i topped it up the horrible noise stopped!!

Have a go at bleeding the system first as described in the post above and see if it works, it may take several attempts

Thanks Dean, I'll give it a go tomorrow. The thing that has me puzzled is that after 5 mins it stops and there is not a whisper out of it! Also, the steering isn't affected at all, still feels perfect!

Are you sure its the PS pump then as you would feel it through the wheel response with a judder or heavy steering

 

It could be the aircon pump or just the belt slipping when under load, is the belt old or does it seem to have lost some tension

 

It is starting to sound like the aux belt to me and not the PS pump??

Ok, basic question as it might not be the power-steering. As you look at the engine bay, where is the pump located?

 

Also, how come the noise stops very quickly? Doesn't really sound like a belt slipping, but I'm no expert! :)

Follow the fatest pipe form the resivoir, it leads into the pump.

 

It sounds like it is your pump making the noise. You might not have to blead it to epmty, just top it up and get all the air out of the system. The whine stops once the fluid gets hot as the level in the resivoir rises, which explains why yours stops after a few mins of running. It's dead easy to do, jusy have a towel at the ready to mop up any fluid it spits out.

Also, off topic a bit. Does anyone know if there is a diagram of the N/A 1995 on here?

 

Really want to know exactly where everything is in the engine bay!

Could be an air leak on the suction side, the union is sealed with an O ring, these harden, heat then softens them up a bit and they start sealing again. Ditto a blocked strainer in the reservoir, the oil thins with heat and flows more easily through the bunged up gauze. Could be the bearings in the pump, the grease warms up and lubes the front bearing when warm. Needs a bit of stripping and examining.

Think I'm going to try draining and replacing the fluid, bleeding and see how it goes. Failing that, it should still be covered under the dealers warrenty so will just get him to replace the pump.

 

Is it likely to be anything else apart from the power-steering?

Squealing is the first warning sign of your front crank pulley seperating into its two parts. Do a search and you'll get lots of useful info on that particular thing.
