Buying a playstation 3, question.

Well, I'm more getting one for my Birthday if you know what I mean :D However, I'm a bit out of date with whats going on, is there anything I need to know before buying? This is what I know.

They play BR which I need.

They only come in 40Gig now. (is this enough?)

They are all ready for wireless.

You need an HDMI cable to really take advantage of BR.

Can you play films with controller or need one of those remotes.

Are wireless remotes extra?

Can people download "backup" games?

Cheers.

40gb should be more than enough unless your a real hardcore gamer? not entirely sure on the wireless question, tried setting it myself but no luck, heard from someone that you might need an adapter. you'll need to download updates regularly from the internet, as newer games won't work unless you've donwloaded the lastest firmware. not really sure theres a great deal to know

They have built in wireless so if you have a wireless router in your house you are ready to go. The HDD may only be 40GB but you can easily upgrade it anytime you like. As for HDMI you basically want that for the games as well as bluray ;)

The controllers are all wireless as far as i know and yes you can control the dvd/blu-ray player with the standard controller.

There are no hacks for the PS3 yet. I don't doubt there will be one soon enough though. I would guess the older the version of PS3 you can get the more likely and quicker it will become hackable.

40GB is fine, but you can change the HDD if you require more space (without affecting your warranty). If you DO, make sure you don't get one of the current 500GB 2.5" drives, they're physically too big to fit.

They have wireless, though I've found it to be a bit weak - try and use wired if you can.

HDMI/Component cable is pretty essential (HDMI if you can), Composite cable included in the box doesn't do anything any favours, especially not a PS3. Get one from the outset.

You can play films with a sixaxis controller, but I advise getting the BR remote - makes everything much easier! I only wish it was backlit..

If by wireless remote you mean the blu-ray remote, yes. You only get a Sixaxis, composite cable, power cable, and the Playstation 3 itself in the box.

The PS3 has not been cracked, and is unlikely to be in the near future. Since it has the capability to run linux out of the box, the linux scene aren't interested and they're usually heavily involved in 'cracking' a console. It's also worth considering a blu-ray disc is 25 or 50GB so even if it was possible to play 'backups', it would be a HUGE download - and you'd need a blu-ray burner & discs (£80+ for a burner and £15+ a disc). I doubt even if they do crack it the option to put games on the hard drive (like the PS2/Xbox) will arrive for a long time.

Only thing the PS3 lacks is a decent internet browser......

Playstation 3 is gonna be the console to have so its good for the future.

However I dont think 40Gb is enough long term. I found out the reason why games are requiring an install is because although blu-ray holds more data..Great! the speed of the drives are too slow for it to be read quick enough, hence most games requiring a Hard drive install. Taken from another website;

bourne conspiracy 5Gb Mandatory install

mgs5 has 4GB mandatory install.

resistance 3 has 3GB mandatory install.

jack4 has 2GB mandatory install.

pes09 has 1.5GB mandatory install.

and thats a small selection.

And with games becoming bigger and better and more blu ray disc space being used, i can only see this getting bigger.

So as you can see 40Gb will nto be enough long term, however it is possible to change the hard drive for 320Gb (the PS3 uses normal PC hard drives) and the ps3 comes with instructions on what to do and it doesnt invalidate your warranty. Well done sony for doing that!

(the PS3 uses normal PC hard drives)

Just to clarify (it's already been mentioned anyway) it's 2.5" 'Laptop' drives, normal desktop 3.5" drive won't fit. ;)

I have a 60GB drive, GT5:Prologue, Kane & Lynch, plus a handful of PS Store games and demo's... The drive is already half full so expect I'll fork out for a ~320GB drive sooner or later.
