Ewen
Come on you lot, surely something as controversial as losing Britannia from our coinage would stir the usual mumblings. Personally, I think the new designs are brilliant...very clever, almost inspired and very attractive. The only downside is that London can no longer claim to be Britannias ass-hole, geographically speaking of course.

SupraAyf
This country is loosing its identity - FAST! I reckon Spain and Cyprus is more British than Britain itself. It starts with coinage and then moves progressively to more controversial issues. I think its time to get that flag pole up in my garden and get that fine flag of ours flying:Pling:
juanchan
Completely unaware of this before reading it here. Personally think they're awful designs. They may well be a novel idea and inspiring, but that's the kind of thing I'd expect from the Royal Mail and their stamp collections. How much tax payer money was wasted on this I wonder? Max Headroom
Threads like these are pointless, the petrol price increase thread being one. We all moan about it and say how bad it is yet do feck all to change it. Saying that you cannot protest these days, otherwise you will find yourself looking at the inside of a prison cell. And we the majority allowed this to happen

keancy
Nope - bring on the Euro I say! Mate if the Euro is introduced here we will go down the pan just as badly as Germany did. Germany had one of the strongest currencies going until they took the Euro now they are totally screwed. When I went back to my hometown in 2003 nearly every retailer and factory had shut down and according to some of my Family members they have never been worse off financially then they are now. Trust me we do NOT want the Euro.

It must've been a stupid idea.

All vote Conservative! (that's presuming they're the most likely non-labour winners... are they?)
carl0s
I know nothing about politics, which is why I might be talking rubbish. I see from here (clicky) that the general elections are where we pick individual local members of parliament. Is that how it works? Do we just pick a local MP of whichever party, and whichever party has the majority of won local MPs becomes the party whose leader is the PM and second in command becomes the chancellor, etc? Or is there another election where we just pick a main party and prime minister? edit: I see: The party with the most seats, i.e. the most MPs, usually forms the government, and the second largest party forms Her Majesty's Opposition. In the last elections if you look at who won seats the majority of seats in ENGLAND were won by Conservatives, it was only the Scottish Labour voters that swayed it for this current bunch of shysters. Labour won less of the vote, along with voter apathy to hold onto power.

ivan
No problem losing the old girl here. I'm just glad they didn't chose one of the other daft designs that I saw suggested. Yeah, a crescent design would have gone down a treat right now.

Ewen
Britannia was basically a Roman muse, at a time when we were all Italian. It was later adopted by 'Britons' and came to its full significance when we were forging an Empire and mugging half the countries around the world. Now our coinage depicts the Royal shield of arms....still British, at least as much as the Royal family are British. And they are very shiny.
