Sky Insurance: sharp practice?

I really can’t see the benefit of having a club insurer these days unless the company can give some benefit to all of the club members (and not just a lucky few as what appears to be the case).

I suppose having the Supra Forum as a direct sales association is incredibly good for Sky as they get to use our banner on their sales adverts.

No insurance company (or broker) can cover every possible member. Based on the surveys that have been run in the past they offer the best quotations/policies for the largest group of members (late 20/early 30's, good insurance history in medium-low risk areas)

It's unrealistic to expect us to have a single company which can provide cover for all members and all risk categories. However if you can provide the name of one which can, we will be more than happy to open discussions with them ;)

Thats one of the companies they use. Also Marketstudy and NIG but suspect there are a load more.

Ah ok, thanks.

Seemingly my current insurers use Ensign too - and gave me an identical quote to that of Sky, so when I found out they use Ensign it kinda made sense.

Sky did say that they had given me Club members discount (I didn't mention this to my current insurer) so obviously the club member discount worked out to be £0, which is kinda disappointing, as I thought we'd benefit having them as the club insurer.

I've just cancelled my policy which has about 3-4 months to run yet. Sky have told me that I will only get approx £30 back.

Despite asking for a breakdown of why the amount is so low, all I've got is a 'we can confirm you'll get xxx' letter posted to me.

I'll be asking politely again for an explanation of why a policy I paid over £800 is only worth a £30 refund.

More accurately, my point is why do we need a club insurer? We need a 'Paul Whiffen' and a 'Nic' and a 'Michel Lane' but why do we need a club insurer?

Seems that the main thing to learn from the start of this thread is to check all insurance on all possible car replacements before taking the leap...

I got a great deal from Adrian Flux on a policy for my JDM Supra TT, while the best they could quote on a UKDM Prelude VTEC was £100 MORE?? And the Prelude quote included my 10 years NCD...

All insurers have their pros and cons so it really does pay to shop around and do all homework and read all small print before changing vehicles and/or insurers

Will be detailed in your policy docs somewhere.

Sky have told me that they're 'only' getting a 10% refund from the insurer.... 10% of £800 isn't £30. I'd like to know where the remaining money's going, surely it doesn't cost £50 to send out a couple of letters... and if it does, they can tell me why.

By the way I hate ALL insurance companies with a passion, so I'm usually a bit unfair when dealing with them. :)

Ive wondered about the 'club discount' being applied also.

I think some members (this isn't aimed at you Andy) have short memories. Sky have supported this club well at past events like JAE and sponsered the Supra Pod event last year. Without their support, some of those events may not have happened for the club.

I'm sure I was told "oh yeah, you drive a Supra so we've already included the owners club discount" once when I dropped it into the end of the conversation that I was on here (this was 12 months ago when I first got the Supra).

It'd be nice to see "Policy Quote = £800, mkivsupra.net owners discount = £-80" or something similar if we are actually getting a discount.

That makes all of the difference then Doug. I suspect they will be able to give more to the club this year then(wink wink):D

I kinda suspected as much myself going by the quotes I've had from other brokers.

I wonder if I'd get more as a member of Dorset Jap CC instead? Apparently they get 20% discount from Sky...
