Anyone know where I can get hold of a 4Gb (or 8Gb) Eee Pc in the UK (I'm not interested in importing one) I missed out by about 30 minutes this morning from the local Toys-R-Us :(

Edit: would prefer a brand new one, so would rather not chance my luck with ebay.

We have a 4gb white and a 2gb black. The kids can't tell the difference. Unless you're storing stuff or planning your own OS i.e windows or ubuntu or something, then there's not much difference. No webcam on 2gb though.

The screen resolution is a show stopper for me. I would buy one for myself but it'd have to have more vertical resolution. They're great things though and I'm really impressed and it's good to see the kids using them, and even greater know they're 100% at ease with a gnu/linux system, although they don't use the full desktop mode.

re: memory. hmm. yeah it has a weaker battery too.. same physical size but something like 1ah less capacity.

None of the development packages seem to be preloaded - no make, gcc etc. You can edit the yum/apt/whatever repos though and install regular Xandros packages, but I guess this is where storage space is gonna start really mattering.. so I dunno, maybe you're right to hold out for a 4gb one.

I can't work out what's going on with the partitions & filesystems on the 4gb one I just looked at. The root filesystem is showing as 1.4gb with only ~370mb free, and the second partition (sda2) is apparently not mounted at all, but when I mount it, it shows the same used/free space as sda1. I did a quick google and apparently there's some funny stuff going on with the partitions by design so that a factory restore can be done whilst retaining user data or something, so unfortunately I can't really tell you anything about available space except that it looks like the 4gb one has about 370mb free.

Hmmm. I think you might be better off with 4gb machine and installing Ubuntu 8.04 or Fedora 9.. both due out in a couple of weeks.

I got one back in November and I love it! Take it everywhere with me and you do get used to the small screen, its just a trade off against all the great things about it.

I did think I wouldnt like the Xandros OS and would have to put XP on it but its actually fine, also boots in under 4 seconds :D
