ok some more pics,

I started this morning with removing the dust from the car with an air compressor (very handy!)

then I started to work on the doors and rear quarters, the doors were quite bad!

here's a shot halfway through

and once done

I paid some attention to the rear lights too,

a quick shot of the bonnet before a glaze applied

I then added a glaze and buffed and applied wax by hand and these were some shots in my unit once finished as it was too dark for any pics outside!

I managed to lose about 85% of the swirls and scratches and I reckon another 5% could be lost with another detail in warmer temps :)

That is a fantastic job there Tom.

So we have Peter Richards in Wales, You in Essex and nobody close enough to me :(

Are you able to pull small dings, or deal with stone chips / laquer issues?

Mike

not as yet, I'd love to offer a whole service like that one day though :)

Nice result, you can't beat a freshly pampered black :)

cheers,

hows yours looking? I've seen the thread on your escort, looked great!

like you though I prefer seeing details of much older cars rather then showroom mileage ;)

a guy came in today that wants his mercedes done, it's blue but the bonnet is now white! should be interesting to do!

It's not getting used much at the moment but I had a day on it recently just as an excuse to try the Blue Velvet out, I grabbed some pics before I had chance to do trim, exhaust, wheels etc and the light was rubbish but it gives an idea. Did a bit of wet sanding on some deep scratches that someone has donated but wasn't really out to take pics of everything, it was too cold :)

Absolutely, I'm so tempted to buy one of those pink Vauxhalls you always see them doing on DW, must be so satisfying. The Escort is going soon though and I'll have a 106 that's hardly ever seen wax to play with. I want to get a Mirka and give it a real going over.

That'll be fun :) I keep seeing cars like that and get tempted to ask if they will let me do them for free. It's a disease, I can't stop looking at cars and thinking about making them clean or getting defects out.

LOL, there is a bit of a queue but once the weather starts getting better hopefully I'll be able to get through a few :) I need a nice unit to work in like Tom has!

say Ant leaves his car for a week or so and its covered in salt/dirt whats the best way to wash it to minimise new swirl marks?

jet wash or careful bucket and sponge work?

good question!

for my own car all I do is give a light rinse with water from a hose as a jet wash would most likely cause more scratches if left to build up with dirt, then I add a layer of snow foam and rinse but for people who don't have this then cleaning with the 2 bucket method (one for soapy water and the other for rinsing out) and by using a washmitt rather than a sponge! some sponges are ok, but only detailing type ones, ie made by meguires etc,

the build up of scratches in Ant's paint was all from washing with a sponge and using the local jet wash along with using the brushes they supply!

a normal sponge will scratch paintwork as it traps dirt to the surface of paint which then gets dragged all over the car, then some people even chuck the dirty bucket water straight over the car afterwards! lol

depends if its your living you are making from detailing

So I should really have asked that question a bit clearer. Are the detailing machines expensive to purchase. And do they take a lot of elbow grease out of polishing or do they require alot of effort as well to get the result albeit a far better result than hand polishing?
