MaveriK
Has anyone used this technology yet? Can you point me in the direction of a good web site that explains its ins and outs?
Thorin
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power_line_communication It's not something I've used personally but I understand it works very well. Solwise are the main make to look at I believe, although I think the likes of Netgear are even doing the adapters now too.
MaveriK
Thanks Thorin, will go over that now.
Ric
They are very good, we've used them a few times at work just bare in mind, if you are using them in your house and the upstairs is on a different ringmain than downstairs its not going to work
Pete
We've put these into a few homes - http://www.netgear.com/Products/PowerlineNetworking/PowerlineEthernetAdapters/HDX101.aspx Work a treat.
JustGav
Hmmm, didn't netgear just do a recall because they are overheating? Yup, here we go http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2008/01/25/netgear_recalls_powerline_adaptors/
Multics
I've been using the Linksys SWR2008P very intensively with IP cameras powered by it running 24/7 and they've been very reliable. I use CAT6 cables, I haven't tested more than 10m cables, there are restrictions to length obviously due to the size of the cable being unable to carry the electrical current very far... I hope this helps
MrRalphMan
Just to clear up, were you asking about Ethernet over the mains, aka homeplug.. Extending your network over the mains? Or Power over Ethernet.. Where the Ethernet cable will power the device it's plugged into.

Very good point actually, I was trying to make sense of the post just above and in the context of homeplug makes NO sense, however with PoE it does
scooby_doo_do
I bought some 200mb ones from misco - £105 per set. They work great. They do work on other ring mains, aswell, just so long as they go into the same fuse box. i use one by my router, one by my xbox, one for my tv, and one 200ft away in the garage. MrRalphMan
You'd better give em the choice, if they ever know you knew and their house/business/car/palace/etc... burnt down... Holy Moly..

Gord R
Im using Homeplugs at my current house because wireless is dire. Seem to have been very reliable and speed seems reasonable. Saying that im on awfully slow broadband package. Would certainly recommend very handy things.
Gord R
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=200171419686 - They are the ones im using. Be careful with that ebay seller though , VAT is on top of that price.

Sparky
Hmmm, didn't netgear just do a recall because they are overheating? Yup, here we go http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2008/01/25/netgear_recalls_powerline_adaptors/ Im using these in my house. The walls are just too thick for a decent wireless connection so i bought a set of Netgear Xe103's. They worked fine for about 2 months and then one day the downstairs unit went pop. It was baking hot. Amazon replaced it straight away so im guessing they knew it would happen! Anyways, 8 months on and it still works brilliantly. Online Gamings pretty good too!
