This country is very quickly going to hell in a handcart - just the threat of the cane was enough to make us respect teachers, and as for policemen, they put the fear of god into us...

Let's face it, if you let kids get away with misbehaving, they will do it all the more - you wouldn't let a dog take a crap in the living room without punishing them, so why are kids allowed to get away with stuff ?

We all grew up happy enough without all these ridiculous concessions - kids nowadays don't even seem to have the imagination to keep themselves amused without resorting to some sort of illegal activity or playing video games that will probably rot their brains away. This society has gone backwards over the last 20 years & the more we choose to emulate the USA the worse it gets - let me out of here !!

One more reason I like living abroad. Excellent thread. Nice to see this problem is the same on either side of the pond.

Did you find this in the states? In my very brief experience most of the kids I saw on the streets in NY seemed okay...but I didn't go on the subway often or things like that so it probably bypassed me.

More and more it's going that way. It's just not as extreme. Still, it's coming. Spank a kid and you'll be arrested or have your kids taken away. The terrorist thing and Muhammed things really made me think. People and their causes. I'm tired of having to be nice to everybody and watching people who refuse to change to suit their surrounds ruin my country. Learn to speak English and abide by the laws in place or gtf out. Period.

The world has gone mad. I sometimes wish we could turn back the time where people had respect for other people and other peoples belongings.

Absolutely - we never locked our doors when we were kids - my old gran would close the curtains if a funeral party came past the house.

If you were ill at school, the teachers would send you home knowing your neighbours would look after you until your parents got home.
