Conrad
We do at our house, we've lived here about two years. The things i it's turning out to be very very expensive. We have used over £800 worth of oil since the end over November. That's about £100 a week on heating. We only have it on a couple hours in the morning and a couple hours at night to heat the CH and hot water. Does this sound right? We do have a large home.... Conrad
Wow! £100 per week. That sounds incredibly expensive to me. I know Heating Oil is basically diesel so obviously it's gone up - think we paid about 39p per litre (+ vat) for 2000 litres at the end of Nov. It's about to run out. We don't have a gas mains in our street so that's not an option. We were advised Oil was cheaper than LPG so opted for that when we moved in. But it's just so damn expensive, something must be wrong. We def don't have any leaks....
Kranz
Maybe you can use waste vegetable oil instead, may be worth Googling it? Wouldn't be easy to find the quantity you need, but at least it would be free! Would need filtering & separating too. I remember reading something years ago that veg oil is quite thick and requires compressed air to atomise it as it goes into the burner so it can burn cleanly. There are waste veg oil boilers on the market. kslb
I use oil for heating and it has doubled in price over the last few years but I am not using anywhere near that amount and am also heating a large house. I use LPG for my business and that is expensive far more than the oil. Something can't be right I would get it checked out.
outatime
That sounds a lot to me, I have a 1000 litre tank and one refill lasts me over a year - it cost £405 for 900 litres last week. Have you had the system serviced recently? We don't have the water or heating on in the day, and have an open fire. The house is 4 bedroom detached. Our neighbour is on LPG, and he was moaning it has gone up in line with oil prices.
Havard
Jeez, that's expensive! I just paid £292 for my gas an leccy from Sept 25th up to yesterday and I was upset..... I feel better knowing your plight now Conrad so all is not lost!! H.
Chris Wilson
Crazy, crazy. We use oil for heating and hot water, and our ANNUAL bill is about 350 quid. I am known to not have the place exactly steaming, and CH doesn't go on before October and is off by end of March, but heck, that's silly.

Conrad
Thanks for the comments guys, I was convinced there was something wrong. We use LPG to power our stoves and fires so again this just makes this more ridiculous. We do have a rather large house - just counted and we have 23 radiators and 100 Sq/M of underflor heating. Not all the radiators are on mind and we've stopped using the underfloor heating to keep the costs down. Even so it's still a lot! Our boiler is 2 years old but it hasn't been serviced yet. I'll look into it I think. Also, we have a large water pressure tank which the boiler has to heat up, we needed this tank as prssure was too low to feed all the central heating. Maybe heating this thing up takes some doing?
SupraGirlie
That's ridiculous!!! We have a new Rayburn which does cooking, central heating and hot water in oil it costs 500 a year.

Chris Wilson
Tightarse Mind you, I fitted a woodburner a couple of years ago, my last quarterly gas bill was £48. The amount of felled timber we have here I should look into this, but to be honest the "to do" list is pretty daunting as it is.
keancy
I use Oil Heating and Hotwater. Get 500 litres a year and my Heating is on for about 15-20 min in mornings and about 2-3 hours at night, my hot water is always turned on and Hubby has a bath after work every day. Heating never gets put above 21 tho, if you still cold after that put a bliming jumper on. My boiler get's serviced once a year and everytime the dude sticks in a new injector which has saved me loads of oil.
Digsy
I use oil for heating and hot water. couple of hours in the morning and about 6 hours at night. I have a two bed semi and use about 1000 litres a year. The price per litre has about doubled in the last ten years. About a year ago my usage shot up to almost double what it had been. After investigating I found that the oil pump in my boiler was leaking a tiny amount so I replaced it and the feed pipe. I had the new pump set up to the correct pressure, fitted a new nozzle and the usage immediately came back down again. I'd get it looked at. b_have
Sounds like an overfuel issue. Fit a wideband in the flue.
