  1. Hmm. Doesn't really answer the question. It says that the point of a diff is to allow the wheels to turn at different speeds, i.e. when going around a bend/corner, which is what I thought... until I read Ian C's comments in the above thread about the LSD causing the inner wheel to chirp as it tries to turn at the same speed as the outer wheel. All the HowStuffWorks thing seems to say is that an LSD is the same as a regular (open) diff, but it also allows torque biasing if one wheel has less traction than the other..
  2. Nor me. I didn't realise they were different sizes though. Will my boost gauge not fit in there then Jake? I have a 52mm gauge.
  3. Thanks Scooter, that's interesting although I thought the point of the LSD was that it *did* allow the wheels to turn at different speeds. Or is that just the point of an open-diff, e.g. non-LSD? Does the LSD purely and simply just allow grip when the other wheel loses traction? I have the wheels and tyres off my UK car fitted, so no change there, although the geometry probably could do with being sorted by Chris Wilson when I get some more money - just commited to buying one of his sidemounts so certainly not yet anyway
  4. I don't get this. I thought the point of the LSD was that it allows the wheels to turn at different speeds? edit: thanks to Geoff, I understand now. Awesome.
  5. How many times have we got to ask for pictures dude!!
  6. I bet we're all killing the search function with these searches - I know my searches for the most common words I can find are taking a while - e.g. car, supra.
  7. Fairly certain it's the rear, but I haven't actually thought about it being the front. Hmmm.
  8. I think you're probably right Geoff, thanks. I'm fairly sure it was "Inter-something". It's a small aluminium box about the size of a cigarette lighter, with black and green painted lines down it, I think. I'll try to get a better idea what's wired up to what this week and think about grabbing a Thor unit. It's not as if this problem is really obvious, I think I'm just aware of it and I notice it - other people probably might not notice it immediately.
  9. If you get the frame number - the bit that goes JZA80-xxxxxxx, then we can confirm production date.
  10. Oh hang on, when you said 'all the changes you made', did you just mean changes to the car? I thought you meant all the gearchanges you made with all that extra power, i.e. knackered box. Are the plugs easy to get to?
  11. Hmm. This car had a gearbox rebuild costing £1,400 not long before I bought it. It didn't need the rebuild, but the garage misdiagnosed the dodgy facelift engine-mounts as a dodgy gearbox. I suppose they could have done something funny whilst they were in there Keep the ideas coming please guys, I don't like the sound of the above
  12. I have asked this before but didn't get any answers, so here goes again.. I can feel my J-spec car slip in and out of TC lockup at very-light-throttle cruising between about 56mph and 62mph. It's like a little gearchange is going on, quite frequently. I'm most sure my UK car didn't do this, and I would expect there to be some kind of fuzzy-logic in the ECU to make it basically stay in lockup with such light throttle at obviously cruising speeds. My speed convertor appears to be some weird rectangle box (labelled Inter**** (Interpro - ?)) with four wires attached directly to the screw terminals in the flexible flat pcb on back of the speedo gauges, and as far as I can tell, everything else works properly (active spoiler comes down when it should, and I don't see any other oddities with the gearbox). The car doesn't seem to have a speed limit either, as we hit an indicated 175 on the M6 toll road on the way to Flame and Thunder, but I've not actually looked for an SLD or anything. I'll be fitting my Thor FCD soon when the Fields harness arrives and will obviously have a closer look then. Can anybody shed any light?
  13. My J-Spec facelift car, which apparently has an LSD (according to the VIN plate, and also the seller mentioned it in chit-chat), well it does this "ch ch ch ch" thing when doing 90-degree turns from a standstill, e.g. leaving a side road. I never noticed this with my UK car, ever. Is this normal? I suppose it sounds like one of the wheels is slipping a bit, but it's very sort of timed, like 500msec between the chs "ch ch ch ch ch" at a normal but slightly enthusiastic accelerating pace. What I tend to do now is make these maneuvers (htf do you spell that!) slowly now to avoid it. My UK car definately didn't do this. Is something up, or is it a different type of diff on the facelift import? Digsy's VIN-plate decoder only lists one type of LSD - it's either "Standard (non LSD)", or "Torsen LSD".
  14. It says that car is a non-turbo Auto without an LSD. Colour and trim are in the other boxes on the VIN plate, and you haven't given those so...
  15. Digsy made a VIN-plate decoder Excel spreadsheet, which should be in the downloads or FAQ section. Go get it and give it a go.
  16. carl0s

    annoying pop up!!

and you'll have a faster computer - great
  17. It's an acquired taste. They look awesome to me I agree the R-series look cack, but the T series is very thin and professional looking. They're like a Porsche compared to a mundano. (the picture on that site is wrong - they've got a 15" model pictured, which is a little bit fatter at the front than the 14.1" model)
  18. Sold to one of my customers I'm desperately trying to see if there's anything else I'd rather have for £750, but I just think this is the daddy.
  19. You just need to make sure it really is a 1998 car - i.e. make sure it is facelift, and not just a 1993 car registered with its import date, as sometimes happens. Got any pictures?
  20. That's sounding like a good idea Lewis. If he's not able to give a template, but is still happy to supply the rest of the kit, then I could remove the bracket from mine for copying or whatever. I think he would have a template though. The final price of the finished thing was going to be about £40. The prototype was a little bit less, but then it almost didn't fit. I had to warm the grommet up in hot water and push it in from below. This means the fit is really tight though which I like - no water ingress (I hope.. )
  21. It looks like the guy who was working the kit out, after getting a prototype to me has erm, not got any further with offering the finished kit
  22. They're about £40.. Don't want to rub it in or anything, but.. http://www2.css-networks.com/stubby/12.jpg
  23. A google search for 90980-11214 brings up a SupraForums thread where a guy asked the Supra-savvy Toyota dealership about them and apparently they're not orderable. Fully made-up Fields type harnesses are less than £200 delivered anyway so probably no point.
