  1. Steve, Yup i think they are hydraulic tappits, thats what the RAC bloke said and hence the viscosity (spelling?) of the oil. Does that mean something different then - dont they shims?? Regards Stephen V
  2. New car for me (6sp T VVTi yr2000, no engine mods) Went to pub at lunch time, came out and started it up...... tapping noise coming from engine which was in time with the revs. Gutted - my new toy has broke:( Couldnt see anything but could smell a bit of petrol. Phoned RAC who turned up 30seconds after hanging up - top boys. Had a poke around and said it was a sticky tappet. He rev'd it a bit and then there was a slightly louder click and all was normal - I think. Seems ok now. What next. Its still under warranty so will be taking it someone to sort out (any suggesions in my area?), but wanted to know if this was probably the tappets or something else. Is this common? The RAC guy said it was and could be the wrong oil cos it could of released itself once it got up to temp. It was slightly over filled as well (not good either) Could this mean anything else? Toyota (who i wont be taking it to) said its probably the shims, of which theres 41 sizes and will take until mid Dec to get some. Any thought always appreciated. Cheers Stephen V :(
  3. I know what you mean. i was at my Shell garage last night with a towel trying to dry my wind screen (i've spent enough money with them so i thought its the least they can do:) - felt a bit geeky though I use the pink top up stuff and it now lasts for ages/months. No probes at all. Regards Stephen V
  4. Cheers guys. I work for a big architectural glazing company (we did bluewater shopping village, centre parcs & stuff) so we use all sorts of stuff - none of them will shift it. The roads round here has always got stones on them:innocent: :innocent: ..... Regards Stephen V
  5. Not really. it does leave a very short trace behind, but then you dont use the wipers as much/at all + it leaves the screen so much clearer and the dropplets arent very visable, so the pros out way the minor cons IMO. Can quite happilly drive along at 70 without wipers on. Regards Stephen V
  6. I like the screen stuff. Its not a screen wash though, just a top up for the main rain-x. I still use screen as well which works well. Regards Stephen
  7. only ever used rain-x & love it. Just come back from america & they sell the yellow bottles for under £2 over there:eek: . They also had rain-x wiper blades which i havnet seen over here & wet wipes - they get all the fun Regards Stephen V
  8. HELP Now its been raining for the past month here (4 days then) my wind screen has some dodgy gunk on it which is driving me mad not to mention safety. (could be tree sap i dunno) When the blades wipe it leaves a sort of random splatter pattern which is smeary. If the screen is bone dry or really wet you cant see or feel it, just when you use your wipers. I’ve tried new wiper blades (organic & silicone), 3 different glass cleaners, meths, and lastly rain-X (which I love). The rain-X has helped but its still on there. I’ve even tried one of those sponges with the ruff bit on one side (what ever there called:stupid: ) on a bit of the glass but still jack nothing. HELP!!! Anyone with some kind of industrial sh1t remover idea – its driving me insane. I hate dirty wind screens, especially mine when I cant see out of it. Looks like there could be a large stone coming my way:innocent: Regards Stephen
  9. Hi Chris. The sensor is bolted on the side of the OEM pipe, so i thought i could un-bolt it (carefully) & re-bolt it on the new pipe? Would this be ok?? It seems that it is genereally considered that the air in take is pretty good, but to me looks diabolical (spelling??) with only 2 narrow slots, compared with others. I am concerned about filtration but also like the sound. the cars new to me so am happy with the power at the moment (the BPU will come, i'm sure), especially as its cold outside anyway. Any help always appreciated. Regards Stephen
  10. Thanks very much. I'll do some hunting around Regards Stephen V

    HELP with BRAKES

Thanks for all your replies. Discs - yes its a right bugger. The discs are a little scored. When i saw the car in Japan (photos) they said it had the Jap brakes, but when it came in the country they said it had the UK brakes? .......... fishy??? going to have a look at the original photos. Are all the VVTi supposed to come with the bigger brakes as standard? Going to have to look into this some more. The boot rubbers seem ok & my first thoughts was the catch. I dunno.... i'll take it into a garage and let them do the buisness under the warranty i suppose and ask if the brakes look like been changed. I've heard mixed reports about the EBC stuff. i used to have the green on my prelude which was a damn sight better than the standard stuff. i know someone who uses the red on a 200sx who seems to get on well with once there up to temp, but its 200kg lighter. Will post on any findings:) Regards Stephen

    HELP with BRAKES

HISUPE Bollox:( I'll be on the phone then. Gordon F The boot holds itself very well. even if i open it with the key it has to be pushed up whislt the key is turned. it doesnt spring up though. It came with the standard jap toyota alarm. you push the button once and it locks, pusg it again and it beeps at me - so i presume its armed?? but doesnt seem to function. I have fitted a CAT 1 alarm as well now, but i think 2 alrams are better than 1? You have PM Gordon Thanks to all

    HELP with BRAKES

Branners, HISUPE, albundy68, Will have a top up then, or maybe all new fluid. albundy68 It doesnt stay on for that long, & is more prone to to happen when i've floored it & then had to stop (as you do:innocent: ) Gordon F Aren’t they the bigger brakes? i'll be really p1ssed off if theyre not. Took delivery of it and then went on holiday - a right pain in the ar5e. new toy and cant play with it:( It is supposed to have the bigger brakes. Piccy attached. the wheels are 17" FYI. Thanks again Stephen PS. Also youve got to keep the boot release lever pulled up to open the boot other wise it still latches. PPS. I cant get the standard toyota alarm to work properly - although its got anohter as well - just fitted. PPPS. All this & its just had its 3rd birthday!!

    HELP with BRAKES

Gordon F HISUPE Nope not yet, going to have a look now. back in 5 minutes:D Cheers
  18. The car is standard at the moment in this department and will hopefully be sticking on my RAM filter at the weekend which came of my old car. After probing around, there’s a sensor mounted in the side of the pipe I want to remove, which will get replaced with an elbow pipe with the filter on the end of it. 1. Does this sensor measure the air temp? 2. Where do I put it now? Does the sensor in the OEM pipe un-bolt so I can I cut a hole in the new elbow pipe and fit it there? Or is there more to it? :stupid: Any help would be greatly received. Got some piccys if you would like a look:) Many thanks Stephen
  19. Probably a naive question??? Haven’t had my car for long (only been out 6 times:( ) When I brake quite hard, but not so the ABS cuts in, the ‘!’ warning light comes on and now the ‘hand brake/pad’ warning light comes on as well, which I don’t think it did to begin with. I take/hope this is just the brake pads? Any suggestions please? Got some piccys if you would like a look Many thanks Stephen
  20. Thanks very much………. I am now ENLIGHTENED
