belt shredded!

Hey guys, bit of guidance if you can with my NA Auto :D

 

I started my car this evening and it started squeeling very loud as i turned the steering wheel, and within 20 seconds it had stopped squeeling so I drove it home (5 mins drive) I parked up outside my garage opened the door jumped back in the car and as i was lining the car up to the garage it squeeled again then loads of lights came on the dash & i could smell burnt rubber. got the car in the garage as it was half way in, popped the bonnet and the belt that goes around the pullys and turns the fan has shredded!

 

My question is, am I right in assuming this belt runs water pump, alternator and fan and its not serious if it fails, and also where do you get them from and how hard are they to change?

 

Im gonna call up a few places tomorrow i think, and would I be right in requesting an Auxiliary belt??

 

Sorry to sound a bit of a Noob, but I am when it comes to supra's and Im just a bit concerned that I have done some internal damage to engine etc when the belt shredded!

 

ps, I did have a quick look on the search but couldnt find anything specific to my problem with the belt actually snapping! :D

here's what i'd do..............

 

Remove the belt (post back up if you can't see how)

 

Check all the pulleys spin freely or with moderate hand pressure, except the lowest pulley the crank pulley. Thoroughly inspect this, its x2 metal parts with a rubber part bonded to both, you should be able to see/feel the rubber on the outer face of the pulley a cm or two in from the very outer edge, you may see some surface cracking (this is common) or it may be in two bits!!

 

Could be/likely to be a seized ancillary pulley, the belt has been forced over this and shredded.............assuming it wasn't almost totally knackered already.......

Will do tomorrow, should be easy to remove the remnants of the belt i think, im not sure when these were last changed tbh as I only bought it bout 3 months back. Im thinkin the cambelt may be a good bet to change too if this belt has failed.

 

I'll check to see if they all spin or if any have seized up and re post tomorrow once I know more. Are these hard to change and is it likely to have caused any internal damage from the belt biting the bullet?

Nah, it'll be fine. Belts do fail of their own accord when they get old, you may find it's all fine. But the crank pulleys are known to fail so as Scooter says it's worth checking carefully. The belt itself is an absolute piece of piss to change, there should be a few posts on here with the details.

Right, have had a look, the belt has litterally split in two right down the middle with one half staying on, but very slack and the other half wrapping itself around the fan. I tried spinning all the pullies and they all seemed to spin with ease inc the fan, however there are two with a polished head and no grooves on, the bottom one of these would not spin left or right.

 

The belt itself looked knackered tbh, on the tread side the rubber had chunks missing and crackes every few MM the full lenght of the belt, so im not sure if this is a seized pully, shagged belt or a combination of the two!

 

I have taken some pictures, see attatched..

 

can anyone give me some advice and also is the belt in question the auxiliary belt and how hard are these to change yourself, i have no documentation to go off you see so im a bit hesitant about starting this myself and getting it wrong!

Bit hard to see from the photos, but that crank pulley definitely doesn't look right. There should only be one pulley with no grooves, that's the tensioner which is the one on the arm at the top. The one you say doesn't move is the crank pulley - it shouldn't move because it's attached to the crank and drives the others. It should have grooves, it sounds like it's fallen apart.

 

To put a new belt on if the crank pulley was OK you just put the belt on all the pulleys, then put a breaker bar with a socket on the nut on the tensioner pulley and push it to move the tensioner so you can get the belt over it. To change the crank pulley is a bit more of a pain to say the least! Mainly because the bolt that holds it on is done up very tight indeed, you normally need a special tool to lock the pulley and a very large breaker bar or powerful air gun. Some people use the starter to do it.

The bottom one will not turn under hand pressure, thats normal, the other should spin very freely.

Simon B's photos clearly show the engine pulleys and you can see how the lowest hard to move one (crank pulley) has lost its outer ring ie it shouldn't be smooth it should have grooves like all the others (bar the tensioner above it as this is the only pulley that runs on the outside/smooth part of the belt)

 

Firstly you should be grateful for the minimal damage occurred, these rings can fail at high rpm and cause lots of damage, and also leave you without power steering etc. Secondly given your pulley may have failed on your drive you need to find the outer part of the crank pulley that could well be under the engine on top of the undertray.

Third you'll need to get a 2nd hand (possibly false economy) or new crank pulley and a the special tool to allow you to remove refit it.......

 

Its a shame you are so far away else we could sort you out in a couple of hours.........

Have today took the car to a local jap specialist garage here in hull [Japtech] for some work to be done..

 

there gona do:

 

Aux Belt

Crank Pully

Cam Belt

Oil / Filter

Uprate Brake lines

Change brake pads

Change rear tires

 

and also got em to price up how much to de limit the car for me too :)

 

anyways, heres a pic i took while following my car on the back of a truck! lol

I had a 2JZGTE crank pulley rubber leave the front of my aristo vertex at 80 on the A33....scary as hell! Sounded like someone letting off a hand grenade under my bonnet as the rubber donut bounced around my engine bay before finally flying out the bottom (thank god i dont believe in undertrays) and disappearing into the woods....lol

Sounds like your having the full works done. Bet thats gonna cost a few quid!!!!

Mind you to be honest its better safe than sorry. I got my timing belt done about a month ago coz service history was all in jap so didn't have a clue when it was previously changed. Turns out after it was stripped down and taken off along with tensioner, looked like it was brand new anyway. Nevermind, least I no now and it peace of mind.

Yeah ok you got me there!!!!!!!!! [OOPS][/OOPS]

But to be honest I don't have a great deal of knowledge on the actual workings of the j spec twin turbo engine. Some threads that I read say it is an interference engine and some say it is a none interference engine so I thought what the hell get it done anyway. (My uncle owns a garage so only charged me for the materials so smiles all round)!!!!!!!!

Have to let me know where Japtech is, Im only in Lincoln :)

Wise move doing the cambelt as once the crank pulley is off as generally the hardest job in a cambelt change is getting the pulley off in the first place!

 

Cheers dude, yeah I thought best bet was to get it looked at while there workin on the car, I have only had it three months and while i do have a good history on the car there is no record i can find of this being done..
