Fluid Change AUTO Gearbox

Doing a light fluid change (2 litre).

I have no idea what fluid is currently in the box atm but anyway which is the recommended Fluid Type from toyota?

ATF TYPE T–II (from workshop manual)

or

ATF TYPE IV

Also is Redline Fluid recommended or stick with Toyota?

I've always used Dextron III on all my Toyota boxes, recognised replacement for the type II fluid. If you want to go hardcore on the box service get a gearbox filter from Toyota as well.

From toyota, do the gearbox filters come as OEM for the Tripronic Boxes?

All auto boxes have filters, its internal so you have to drop the sump to change it.

Cool, so where do you buy your dextron III?

I just get it from halfords mate.

Halfords sell a 5L can of I think Comma Dexron iii. Cost me £12.50 with a trade card. i think normal price is about £15. Works out a lot cheaper than the little 1L bottles but then you need a decent funnel as the 5L doesn't come with a spout.

Good to know, I was just going to check ebay prices for a 5l as well and I have 0.5l poring cans at work .

How would I go about doing a full gearbox oil flush and refill??

I will be doing this shortly as well

Ahh maybe I will pm him, I know the filter is in the sump as someone said above should be easy enough.

Just the next part, the full flush and refill?

I'm thinking disconnect the igniter, turn the car over in 'P' or 'N' with the oil out let line disconnected? Could be bad though turning the gears dry.

Or,

Dissconect the oil outlet line into a bucket.

Turn engine on.

Quickly fill with oil, through the filler plug or dipstick(?) as it pumps out in to bucket.

Stop when it is clear of old fluid.

Can it be done safely?

A full flush isn't a good idea on an autobox. iirc better to do regular 2 ltr drain and refills

Is there any easy way to fill the box if the level is low? or is it a case of pouring it down the dipstick hole?

Dipstick hole will be fine as from manual.

In the manual it has nothing on a full flush so 2 ltr drain and refills is the way to go for me, new Toyota T-IV ATF has sufficient additives to maintain this coating and also enough co-polymers to rekindle the older ATF.

The older ATF is still red anyway, only just gone bpu so needes a maintain!

Dont start the engine! Just turn it over with the ignition disabled.

Thought that was the safer and more controlled way yes but I'm only doing the 2l regular changes now because my fluid is still very new looking.

You could probably take both hoses off the cooler and use one to suck new fluid in and let old one flow out the other. Might be harder to control this way and I'm not sure if it's a safe method but I've heard about somone doing it this way on here I'm sure.
