Ady
Ola Just read the post on the stick gear changes, and im wating to replace my ger box oil. I have rang my local toyota, and they said the V160 oil is no longer available but have offered my the following as an equal match ESSO - ATF - DETRON - TYPE D21 065 Any good? or is it a nono? tDR
I'd say no. Toyota dealers are notorious for putting ATF in when it's the wrong oil to be putting in the Getrag box. Have you tried the traders in the states for v160 oil? Drop dusty from MVP an email. Cheers, Brian.

Tom
I'm pretty certain dextron 3 is what you need.

Tom
That's wrong, that's also ATF. If you look in this thread, http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?t=125092 BMW use an equivalent. I think it's made by Esso. and this quote I have been looking into this recently too Apparently (and this is from an email i got from getrag themselves) Esso Dextron D21065 is the only oil the v160 and v161 gearboxes were ever tested with. Apparently, Toyota just rebranded this oil and sold it on Its still available (telephone call from exxonmobil earlier today) but only in 20 litre cans. They are seeing if they can get me some. John from speaking to Scott at nexus performance he tells me dextron 3 is a higher grade to dextron 2 and that is what should be used. Toyota as above mentioned just rebrended it and make an extra fortune on the same oil.
Tom
*I think* not 100% but I even thought it says on the label on the gear box to use an "ATF oil"
tDR
It's a higher grade Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) yes. Surprisingly enough, made to exacting specifications for Automatic Transmissions. People have tried numerous 'equivalents' over the years and subsequently complained of poor shift feel, noises etc etc. The dealers seem to have perpetuated many of these 'just use dextron 3 ATF' myths - I think it's something on their parts system or a sticker on the box itself that confuses them into making that recommendation. Cheers, Brian.
Tom
Well I'm interested to see what Chris uses himself or Mark of Phoenix.
SUPRASUZUKI
Castrol Transmax Z is a suitable substitute - a high grade ATF suitable for the Getrag 'box according to this and Castrol's web site.... http://www.turbosupras.com/pages/en/pages/technical/V160.htm

Scooter
some very interesting reading here especially in regards to the BMW fluid and how the M5 gearbox whilst a 6 speed getrag is not exactly the same as the earlier supra box..........Dextron II 'seems' more applicable than the MLT bmw stuff per this thread, and Royal Purple 'seems' to convince even the techie guy that its a suitable alternative..........all a bit
Chris Wilson
I use genuine Toyota V160 oil as I have a "stache" of it. I only use it on cars i service, and am not interested in selling it on, sorry. When that runs out i will use the correct esso oil, easily obtained from any BMW dealer. If I had my own manual 6 speed Supra I'd put either Neo or Motul gear oil in, for its better high load shear resistance. I personally think makers use this very thin ATF like oils in manual boxes to flatter fuel consumption on urban cycle tests. Customer cars get the Toyota stuff unless they specifically ask for something else.
SUPRASUZUKI
I do find it strange that an ATF would be used in a manual box instead of a thicker gear oil (shows what I know:(). I'm just glad I've got an auto and enough Type IV to keep me going for another 60,000 miles.
Chris Wilson
Millions of manual boxes use ATF, casting my mind back the Hillman Avenger was one of the first I was aware of. Friction loss minimisation, especially with cold oil, is the reason.

Guest kwiktoy
Probably the best price you will get from the US is from the Parts Manager (Curt Aigner) at Elmhurst Toyota, Chicago. This Toyota dealer sells to Supra owners at trade price, about 30% off retail. His details are to be found at http://www.supraforums.com/forum/index.php under Sponsor Forums. I just spoke to Curt and he is happy to export. Cost per quart is about $37 (approx. 18 GPB) and you would need two. I have no idea what he would charge for shipping. nigelboyne
Toyota V160 gear oil is discontinued and the idiot in Toyota Garage put Syntrex 75w 90 in. The car was almost impossible to go from 1st to 2nd when cold as nobody over here in Ireland or Northern Ireland can help me to recommend an equivolant to the V160 I have taken a chance myself and put 1.9 litres of Toyota ATF Type T/IV which is fully synthetic ATF. The gear change was immediately improved
