PJ
Just don't succumb to using text speak in your texts, all the messages I send are in full English, it's not like it takes that much longer to do. Won't affect your spelling then, unless you rely heavily on the predictive text. Read a lot of books too

Pabs
With predictive text, I always used to write in full, without dropping to "text-speak". However, now I have a PDA-type phone with full qwerty keyboard, it takes me hours to send a text message, so I'm starting to type texts in that dreaded way Hasn't affected my spelling otherwise though

I enjoy texting full words on the kJam (has a slidy outy keyboard). Always thought of getting just a smaller phone but the keyboard and Tom Tom functionality is keeping me true. Jezz
I always text in full English too. Capitals and punctuation where its supposed to be. I think nowadays it's cheaper to call isnt it? Texts are 10p odd, might as well just call, say 'Hello mate, coming for a beer', and hang up.
Gaz Walker
and if the husband answers:rolleyes: Then your screwed I think nowadays it's cheaper to call isnt it? Texts are 10p odd, might as well just call, say 'Hello mate, coming for a beer', and hang up. Exactly, I just don't get it?! The only reason I can see it being useful is if your in a club and its impossible to speak or your banging someone else's missus, like Gaz, above Gaz. hogmaw
I find it hard to understand text speak. I literally have to figure out each and every 'word' to try and understand what is being said. Can people who regularly use text speak actually read it fluently as they could if it were proper English? Unfortunately it is rife amongst young people, and I think it's here to stay. English is such a flexible language, it will be the norm in 50 - 100 years, just like English now is so much different to that written 100 years ago. PJ
Test speak, for me, is one of the reasons (there are many) why mobile phones should be age restricted, maybe banned for the under 16's and especially banned within schools. Health implications alone should warrant this, let alone the dumbing down of kids education and spelling. It would also greatly cut down on minors being mugged and the like too. Exactly why does an eight year old need a mobile?

Havard
employies. That's employees btw...... I think that the mobile phone generation has a lot to answer for. I don't understand why people can't adapt to the situation they are in. When I'm texting I abbreviate, when I am on here I write everything in full and the English is exceptional.... I think that the fact that the mobile phone generation are not educated well enough might have something to do with it!! H.

Babe
When I taught in High School, kids wrote in 'text speak', used to drive me nuts. When I asked them to change it to 'proper English', they couldn't do it... never mind the spelling, they couldn't even write with the correct grammar!
