supragold
What gains do you get from having a screamer pipe other than the sound and spitting flames everywhere under your engine bay???
RobSheffield
Erm...... Just the sound perhaps. You can have the dump tube/screamer pipe routed back into the exhaust Mark, but the exhaust that goes out the wastegate at WOT/full boost has to go somewhere
supragold
Just wondered Rob. Mine is routed back into the exhaust at the moment.
SimonB
Simple, it's a lot easier to arrange than plumbing it back into the exhaust, which makes it cheaper, which is why all the turbo kits come that way.
supragold
which is why all the turbo kits come that way. My turbo kit didn't come with the screamer set up, mind it wasn't a cheap setup
Alex
Think Nic pointed out the other day that the HKS kits are all rerouted into the exhaust. The American kits arn't, for reduced cost.
Gaz6002
I was under the impression that there are no gains - routing back into the exhaust at a shallow angle can even aid backpressure/gas flow in the exhaust.
Wez
Its cheaper and some people like the noise. I am putting together a new kit for myself which routes back into the exhaust as the screamer reduces the number of trackdays I can go to.
supragold
Fair point. Cheers
Joeatphr
I know of a lot of people that like to hear the wastegate dump. Especially the people driving beside you. Again it is easier and less restrictive to just make the dump instead of putting it back into the exhaust. That is what happened when we made the CARB legal kit for some of our more restrictive states that are harder to pass emissions. Cheers, Joe
JohnA
The technical reasoning is that the gases coming through the screampipe will interfere with the turbine outflow and 'ripple back' some backpressure. This is true to an extent, especially if the meeting point of the pipes is within a foot of the turbine or their angle is steep. If you can get the pipes to meet further down at a shallow angle it should be no problem flow-wise, but you lose the 'wow' factor when the wastegate opens up! I got my manifold and downpipe kit he created and it all feeds back into the exhaust trail, its not on the car yet but looks a tidy setup

I got my manifold and downpipe kit he created and it all feeds back into the exhaust trail, its not on the car yet but looks a tidy setup Thats the setup I have but the wastegate mounting pipe was supplied with the wrong flange for my wastegate. I am looking at getting a custom downpipe made based on this setup, the idea being to make the downpipe include the cat 1 section with a flex included, I have no need for a seperate cat 1 pipe. Then to make it even quieter I want to modifiy a cat 2 pipe and fit an inline silencer. I am Hoping these mods bring the noise right down so i can do more trackdays

Pig
Which one, down pipe or cat 2 pipe? I think i read it slightly wrong. I was under the impression you were going to be making a decat pipe that got rid of the screamer pipe and also had a silencer in??
Wez
Ahh ok, I am looking at two pipes, a 2nd decat pipe with a silencer as one pipe and then a new downpipe to get rid of the screamer and cat 1.
