Hy-Performance
Ok, here are the symptoms: Start up in the morning, clear windscreen. Drive off, no probs, after a few minutes, strage smell. The same smell as when you take the rad cap off and smell the water. Then the windscreen steams up to shit and i cant see anything. Turn heaters on, warm air but no clearing the mist It is really starting to annoy me, open the window and it still doesnt clear Smell seems to be worse when you give the car some beans!!!! Seems to be running ok, quick and mpg is fine?!?! Any help is much appreciated, i know my bumpers but this has me stumped Chris

Wez
I have the same issue at the moment and also think this is the heater matrix, apparently a real arse to replace as the whole dash has to come out i think. Anyone got any instructions on this?
Hy-Performance
Do you get a strange smell matey?
Chris Wilson
Syphon out about an egg cup full of of coolant from the rad and boil it on the cooker, see if it's the same smell. If so it's almost certain the heater matrix is leaking, and it's a MAJOR job.

Stu_Fraser
Bloody hell, i remember when i did the matrix on my old car, it took me and my mate two and a half days to do. Everything had to come out of that aswell, when we did get it back together again there was still a few screws and bolts spare

Chris Wilson
Originally posted by Hy-Performance Shit this is a nightmare, has anyone ever ran their car without a matrix??? Cheers, Chris Turn the heater to full cold (but not A/C cold...) or off altogether, they will be your only options, no heat at all. Be gald it's not a 90's Merc, they have 2 matrices, and getting them out makes the MKIV seem like childs play. I have done one MKIV matrix, I just can't justify the time / hassle when clips break and Toyota want you down there to point out just what you need. People don't want to pay the time involved, they find it unbelievable unless they have tried to do one themselves. If you rush it things WILL snap and break, stuff won't go back properly, sundry rattles, mysterious bits left over, blah blah. It really is a terrible job. womble
Originally posted by Hy-Performance Shit this is a nightmare, has anyone ever ran their car without a matrix??? Cheers, Chris Yep me . Went all last winter without one (spring couldn't come fast enough) as I'd just started up in business and money in the company was far more important than heat in the car . Should be getting mine sorted in the next couple of weeks now that I've got a regular income, but in the mean time it's just a case of wraping up warm. Had to drive to Liverpool at 7 in the morning the other week and nearly died of hyperthermea !!!.
Hy-Performance
Hi, Well bypassed the matrix and put a bid in for a portable heater on ebay PMSL!!!! Oh well, least work is only 20mins away and i usually have the window open to wake me up anyway lol Chris PS: Cheers Lovatt
Miguel
Dunno if this wil help...But if you plan to leave it bypassed for a while over the winter ...I may have some heat strips that you can stick on the inside of the screen and plug into the cig lighter(acts like the rear de mist then). Had to use them in the beetle days as they have shat heating at best .
Whitesupraboy2
Migster do u know where i can get these from? As my old XR2i had electric heated front windscreen. This one is like a 5 mil silver strip that you can lay along the bottom of the screen or all the way round, cut to length jobbie then plug into gig lighter. Common practise in the beetle days . Thank Christ they are over .. I will rummage around and try to find the name of the makers and if they still work your more than welcome to em PS i got em from autocavan ..yonks ago ..some of the beetle specialist still do em.
