Paul -C-
I've noticed that when I floor it the revs jump up, then drop down 500rpm, then start climbing again. Is it supposed to jump, drop, then climb, or is something up?
AJI
Sounds like your clutch maybe slipping. Does this happen in 3rd,4th,5th on full boost by any chance?
Paul -C-
I assumed it was happening on all gears, although it's hard to watch the rev counter when you floor it in 1st or 2nd.
Paul -C-
My clutch pedal has started squeaking, but I was gonna oil the pedal to get rid of that... Could it be my clutch about to go?
AJI
No a squeaky pedal isn't an indication of your clutch on its way out. Just squeeze some oil on it and it should cure it. But if you find your revs rising and your car not accelerating as it should then this does sound like your clutch. It usually happens on full boost which is why I asked about 3rd + gears. Quite often your turbos haven't spooled up fully in 1st and 2nd before you have to change gear. So you might not notice it. Is your car modified as in extra power output? My car will sometimes experience a little bit of clutch slip when I accelerate hard in 4th and I notice the boost gauge reading 1.3bar. Most times it will bite and accelerates hard 99% of the time. If yours is doing it in all gears and only on hard acceleration then I would suspect it was a clutch problem. I would get a second opinion before going to put one on order by the way... I'm no car mechanic I must point out !
Paul -C-
Thanks for the advice mate, it's appreciated! The only performance mod so far is a double decat pipe, although I still have the standard catback on, so there isn't much gain from the decat yet. It's pretty wet outside, but once it dries up I'll take it for a spin to see if it's happening on all gears, or just 3rd and over.
Paul -C-
If it is my clutch slipping, is the only solution a new clutch?
Ian C
Yep - the friction material has worn out. -Ian
Paul -C-
Ok I've been out for a drive now.... The problem is happening on any level of boost. Even when I just press the accelerator 1 inch the revs jump up, then down, then start climbing again. Could this be a fuelling issue?
Nic
Defintely sounds like the clutch is slipping from your description. Once it starts to slip it will quickly get worse as you drive it more. Mine started slipping just recently and had to be replaced after a couple of weeks as it had become un-drivable. You may get away with just replacing the friction disc and bearing, but once removed you may find you need to replace the whole thing.
Paul -C-
Thanks for the help! Which parts are needed to replace a clutch? Just the actual clutch, like the RPS Sport Street , or do you need other bits and pieces as well?
Nic
It really depends whether you want to recondition the stock Toyota clutch or upgrade to a stronger clutch. The minimum would be to replace the friction disc and bearing, but once the clutch is removed you may find that the pressure plate, clutch housing, etc are also worn and need replacing. Now Im not saying this is the problem (coz Im not that clever) but.... Ive just had exactly the same rev problem with my car + high temps on the EGT gauge. Mine was narrowed down the the Map ECU Air Temp sensor. Not sure which system you run on but just thought it could be a possiblity. (my rev needle problem only occured at low revs though, like in slow moving traffic) Dale
AJI
Also while I remember ..... do you have your air-con on all the time? Your air-con will cause the revs to rise and fall as it turns itself on and off. This usually results in approximately 500rpm increase when its on, and back to normal revs when it turns itself off. Paul -C-
Thanks for the help guys! The problem is definately related to the accelerator, so I don't think it's the air con. I'm gonna book it into the garage and get them to check it out, but I think it's gonna be the clutch. I'll keep you informed
